WeChat ID timeoutshanghaieng Intro Your guide to the best things to do in Shanghai. Hu Weiqi’s spectacular show makes it clear why the young oil painter was chosen as one of the most promising artists in China immediately after his graduation from Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in 2015. This intense show attempts to unveil how deep an imprint China’s political and cultural transition of recent history has left on the mentalities and beliefs of Chinese people. Canvases of vibrant orange and mellow blues symbolise a vivid hopefulness juxtaposed by a cold, anxious reality. The opposing colours have an explosive effect on the canvas, accompanied by the shadows of bodies viewing the evolving scenes. Hu’s unique practice involves the creation of ‘paintings beneath paintings’ in which he creates original, more traditional artworks beneath the apocalyptic outward scenes. Using a mix of media including thick fields of colour and crushed eggshells, the artist completely covers the first layer of painstaking work, before scratching away at the texture to reveal only small sections of the complex oil paintings beneath. Hu’s art is the striking result of an upbringing that has unfolded in the midst of huge cultural and social change, and the effect is both insightful and inspiring. The young painter hopes to help shape the post-industrial society, reinforcing the fact that despite the all too familiar surges of repetitive destructions and restorations, China's unprecedented cultural revival is one that cannot be ignored.
