The Pompidou Centre is coming to West Bund

Gayle Lim TimeOutShanghai 2019-04-11

It has been confirmed that the famous Parisian art museum, Centre Pompidou, will be opening a new franchise gallery at Shanghai's very own West Bund Art District. The Parisian art museum brought the works of celebrated artists Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso and Marcel Duchamp to the city last October, and after the success of that visit, has now found a permanent home in Shanghai.

The West Bund Art Museum, currently under construction, is set to be ready at the end of 2018, and will be home to a five-year art exhibition project from France's Pompidou Centre and Xuhui's West Bund group.

Pompidou is said to have come to an agreement with the West Bund group for a renewable five-year deal to stage exhibitions from 2019. It's slated that the David Chipperfield-designed museum will host around 20 exhibitions and events over the five-year period. According to Shanghai Daily, the cooperation with Paris is part of a huge urban redevelopment project to make the West Bund the 'London South Bank' or 'Paris Left Bank' of Asia.

While there will be shows from the Parisian institution, you can also expect to also see displays highlighting China's contemporary art.
