Hairy crabs get even more expensive this Mid-Autumn Festival
Hairy crabs – the traditional Mid-Autumn Festival delicacy only trumped by mooncakes – are expected to be in short supply this year after a low harvest, which basically means these furry crustaceans are set to be more expensive than usual.
Famously from Yangcheng Lake in Suzhou, the crabs just haven't been biting this year, resulting in a (still staggering) expected yield of 1,200 tonnes of crab for this year's season – which is 4 percent less than last year.
As a result the market price has risen to around 210-220RMB per 500g, according to South China Morning Post. This will see your typical 150g crab setting you back around 70RMB – an increase of approximately 40RMB per 500g from last year's prices.
If you really love some hairy crab as part of your Mid-Autumn celebrations, you're just going to have to accept this extra pinch in the wallet.
