Other than the commute to your office and that annual pilgrimage to Disneyland, it looks like there's going to be another reason to head east of the river.
According to Shanghai Daily, plans are underway for the construction of a giant panda conservation and research centre inside the Shanghai Wildlife Centre, starting next year. The base is a part of a nationwide panda research programme and its first phase will house 30 bears in an enclosure than incorporates education, science, breeding and display.
'The base is designed to simulate the living environment of giant pandas in nature,' said Pan Weihua, a park official, adding that 'they will be arranged into different cages depending on their different growth periods.'
The Shanghai Wildlife Centre is currently home to five pandas, including local kids Yue Yue (28kg) and Ban Ban (26kg) – the first twin cubs to be born Shanghai – who will celebrate their first birthday on October 4.
Construction for the first phase of the Shanghai’s panda research centre is scheduled for completion in late 2019.
