The top 8 things to do this weekend

2017-09-29 Adam Hopkins TimeOutShanghai

From the shuttering of Smash to an international cricket match to MAO Livehouse's eighth birthday, we've picked our top eight things to do this weekend.

1. Miami Nights

PCJ makes his Miami Nights debut, joining Beardslap and Turner for a night of maximum overdrive, early house and hip hop, electro-pop, new wave and all that good stuff from the '80s. The party will also double as a farewell bash for Smash following the sudden announcement that the venue will shutter at the end of this month. They'll be back for one last pop-up booking in October, but otherwise this is the end – we expect them to go out in style.

Smash 685 Dingxi Lu, near Niuqiao Lu. Sat 30. 9pm. Free.

2. KFK Frontstage: Paul Johnson

US comic and former Time Out Shanghai columnist Paul Johnson returns to Shanghai to headline Kung Fu Komedy. A former KFK favourite, Johnson has performed all across America as well as at the world-renowned Edinburgh Fringe. The show will be hosted by Drew Fralick and will feature Adam Alexander Hamilton, Alejandro Scott, Misha Kalhin and Mohammed Magdi.

Kung Fu Komedy Club 1 Xiangyang Bei Lu, near Julu Lu. Sat 30. 8.30pm. 150RMB; 100RMB (presale).

3. Mao Livehosue 8th Anniversary

MAO Livehouse celebrates its eighth birthday with acts including jazz and J-rock influenced rockers No Electricity, punk band Dirty Fingers, hip hop artist Kozay and reggae and roots crew Far East Lions.

Mao Livehouse 308 Chongqing Nan Lu, near Jianguo Zhong Lu. Sat 30. 150RMB; 120RMB (presale).

4. Shanghai Cricket Club vs MCC

Shanghai Cricket Club host a touring team from London's Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) – the world's oldest and most famous club. The visiting side will be brought to China by ex-England captain Mike Gatting and will feature a mix of ex- and current professionals, as well as some of England's best amateur players.

Wellington College International Shanghai 1500 Yaolong Lu, near Haiyang Xi Lu. Sat 30. 11.30am. Free.

5. Diàn Mí (Midi Electronic) Festival 2017

2ManyDJs and Asian Dub Foundation are the surprise headliners for the newly-named Diàn Mí Festival (formerly known as Midi Electronic Festival), along with Scottish producer Howie B.

Taihu Midi Camp Qiduzhen Sun 1-Tue 3 Oct. Midday. 280RMB per day; 680RMB three-day pass; 180RMB per day (presale); 450RMB three-day pass (presale).

French producer, whose CV includes collaborations with Kanye West and Theophilus, hits Arkham for a big Golden Week night.

Arkham 168 Julu Lu, near Chengdu Nan Lu. Sun 1. 10pm. 150RMB; 120RMB (presale).

7. Over Under

This all-day-and-night party kicks off Golden Week with the best kind of double trouble: an open rooftop in the heart Jingan with a warehouse rave hidden underneath. The event promises a showcase of 'shit that makes you feel good' with cocktails, tacos and a barbecue to boot.

1013 Beijing Xi Lu, 7th Floor, near Jiangning Lu. Sun 1. 2.30pm. 150RMB; 130RMB (presale). Entry includes two drinks.

8. Medusa

Kick off your Golden Week with Shanghai's glitter-soaked monthly queer rave Medusa, as Chez Damier, Ultra Nate and Kink, Floorplan and Octave One join residents Michael Cignarale and Mau Mau, and local star Diamond Lil.

Elevator Fourth Floor 218 Xinle Lu, near Fumin Lu. Sun 1. 10pm. 50RMB.
