24-hour 'share gyms' are now a thing

After Didi recently took things up a notch with its new Luxe service, new developments in China's sharing economy hardly surprise us anymore. If you've spotted any small, orange shipping container-like structures around town of late, you won't be taken aback to find out they're just part of the craze. This time it's gyms.

These gyms are courtesy of Park Box, who in order to make working out and exercising more accessible and inclusive to members of the general public, are aiming to install their 'mini gyms' in residential areas across the country. And there are ten already here in Shanghai.

The gyms come in different sizes, ranging from eight to 28 square metres, each equipped with air-conditioning, changing facilities, fitness equipment such as dumbbells, rowing machines, treadmills, exercise bikes and yoga mats, as well as interactive screens that allow users to access coaching and instructional videos (there aren't any trainers working at the gyms). Every Park Box is open 24 hours a day, with the maximum capacity of each gym varying from four to six people at a time, making for what we imagine is a bit of an 'intimate' workout.

You can access a Park Box gym by using the designated app – no need for membership cards and agreements. There is no deposit and use of the gym costs 10RMB per hour. Scan the QR code and you're in.

Due to the potential for over crowding, it's best to book your spot at one of the gyms in advance via the app – you can find your nearest one using the map on the app.
