The Asian badger is making a comeback in Shanghai

Ian Kumamoto TimeOutShanghai 2019-04-11

It might not be a honey badger, but Asian badger still don't give a shit. That's right, they're back!

According to a report by Shanghai Daily, the cute and fuzzy Asian or 'sand' badger is beginning to re-populate parts of Shanghai for the first time in decades, thanks to some serious conservation efforts.

The biggest non-booze consuming mammal in Shanghai, the Asian badger was driven to virtual extinction as a result of rapid urbanisation and habitat loss. Originally from bamboo forests, the badgers now make homes in small caves throughout the city and are most commonly found in suburbs like Songjiang and Jinshan.

Because they are smaller than their European counterparts, Asian badgers are more vulnerable to getting hit by cars and other vehicles, or eaten by large, hungry dogs.

Unfortunately, you shouldn't expect to run into one of the rascals any time soon – there are still less than 20 of them roaming the city, but their numbers are expected to rise.

Here are some pictures of general badgers, you know, to celebrate their comeback...
