The best things to do in Shanghai this week

Adam Hopkins TimeOutShanghai 2019-04-11

The snow has melted and dare we say it's going to get warmer? Well, we can't be the official authority on that, but we can definitely say that there is a whole heap of hot events in Shanghai this week. Check them out below.

Food and Drink

Cobra Lily One Year Anniversary Party

Bar and lounge Cobra Lily celebrates its first birthday with a throwback to 'golden era Shanghai'. So 2007? Ah no, the 1920s. Expect qipaos and Art Deco stylings. DJ Kadwell will be on the decks while Feeling Zhu will accompany on the pipa. The entrance fee includes two drinks and some snacks.

Cobra Lily Xintiandi North Block, No. 19, Lane 181 Taicang Lu, near Madang Lu. Fri 2. 6-11pm. 200RMB.

Kölner Karneval

Zeitgeist in cooperation with the Cologne Carnivals Committee of Shanghai (oh yes, there is such a thing) is bringing you a proper Kölner Karneval right here in China. We're talking a packed buffet of German delights, free-flow drinks, and midnight goulash all soundtracked by DJ sets.

Zeitgeist 537 Haifang Lu, near Xikang Lu. Sat 3. 7pm-3am. 350RMB.

Music and Nightlife

Hurts

Synth-pop duo Hurts, once tipped by NME as the next big thing, bring their Desire tour to Shanghai. Having featured Kylie Minogue on their debut album, the pair went on to score another top ten hit with their second LP. Since then, their success has dimmed a little, with 2017's Desire debuting (and peaking) at 21 in the UK album charts.

Bandai Namco Shanghai Base Dream Hall No. 179 Yichang Rd, near Jiangning Rd. Wed 31. 8-10pm. 380RMB.

MHP

One of Shanghai's best electronic music producers, techno maestro MHP, comes to MAO for one of his sporadic full live band shows. He'll be doing a mini-tour with singer Nova, sax player M20, trumpeter Bob, guitarist Guston, and percussionist In, performing songs from his fantastic Folding Traces record and more. Fellow VOID member Shanghai_Ultra provides support for this homecoming show.

MAO Livehouse 308 Chongqing Nan Lu, near Jianguo Zhong Lu. Fri 2. 9pm-late. 80RMB; 60RMB (presale).

SNH48: Family Group Show + Group Request Time Best 50

All-girl singing group SNH48, once the official Shanghai spin-off of Japanese pop sensation AKB48 but now gone rogue, present two shows at Mercedes-Benz Arena for hordes of baying fans.

Mercedes-Benz Arena 1200 Expo Avenue, near Gaoke Xi Lu. Fri 2-Sat 3. 7-10.30pm (Fri), 5.48-10.30pm (Sat). 198-798RMB.

Gravez

SHFT book Bryson Tiller, GoldLink, and Ekali collaborating rapper Gravez for his Shanghai debut at Arkham. Having initially made his name as a remixer of hip hop's great and good, he's since begun gaining significant traction for his own rhymes and beats.

Arkham Found 158, 158 Julu Lu, near Chengdu Nan Lu. Sat 3. 10pm-late. 140RMB (presale); 80RMB (early-bird).

DJ House Shoes

Self-styled Detroit hip-hop ambassador and a producer who has worked with the likes of J Dilla, Danny Brown and Quelle Chris drops into Shanghai for a big night of quality beats and rhymes with the Come Correct crew. Wondering about the name? It comes from his mother buying him a pair of LB Evans house shoes in 1993 that he 'wore everywhere for several years'. Caution, T-Plus, and MC Jado put on their best tuo xie and provide support here.

DADA 115 Xingfu Lu, near Fahuazhen Lu. Fri 2. 9.30pm-5.20am. 100RMB.

I Love 80s

George Michael, Madonna, Elton John, Michael Jackson - don't be surprised to find their tunes on the speakers as Unico goes all '80s for the night. You can also expect drinks deals and bad fashion. Shoot an email to events@mvpshanghai.com to get in for free before 12.30am or else cough up 100RMB to get yourself in.

UNÏCO Second Floor, Three on the Bund 3 Zhongshan Dong Yi Lu, near Guangdong Lu. Fri 02. 9.30pm-4am. Free.
