3 sports to try this spring in Shanghai

Adam Hopkins TimeOutShanghai 2019-04-11

If Sunday's record temperatures weren't already a giveaway, spring is just about here and it's time to come out of hibernation and get active again. Here are three sports to try in Shanghai this spring.

Cricket

Not a sport many people associate with China, but Shanghai Cricket Club (SCC) has been around for more than 150 years. The SCC League runs from late March until November (including standard league, finals and T20 league) and is made up of various clubs fielding different elevens across three divisions.

Football

Unsurprisingly a bit more popular in Shanghai than cricket, you can play football (soccer for you Americans) in Shanghai pretty much all year round. The Shanghai International Football League runs from September to late May, so it’s a bit late for that, but the Shanghai Stadium 7s Football League runs at Shanghai Stadium from late February until early June.

Contact footballshanghai@gmail.com to see if any 7s teams are seeking players.

Roller Derby

One of the world’s most popular all-female amateur sports, Shanghai’s first-ever roller derby match took place last May. It’s a fast-paced, full-contact sport played on quad roller skates. If you're interested, the Shang-High Rollers are currently recruiting players and officials for their Fresh Meat programme that starts on March 15.

Contact shanghairollerderby@gmail.com or add ‘shrollerderby’ on WeChat for more information.
