Pedestrians take note: Shanghai traffic police are now clamping down on jaywalkers, with third-time offenders being subjected to a 20RMB fine.

Reported by The Waijiao last week, if you are caught crossing when the light isn't green, you'll be asked to present your ID, passport or driver's license, and after three strikes you'll be slapped with a fine. If you can't show any ID to the officer and can't recall your ID number, you'll be fined on the spot – we advise keeping a picture of your passport/ID on your phone.

After being initially skeptical about how aggressively this law would be enforced, we spotted two unsuspecting outlaws being caught in the act this morning and rightfully having their names taken.

So, jaywalkers beware! Next time you cross a road when you shouldn't you could pay the price... of 20RMB – regardless of the dude riding a scooter on the pavement without a helmet, with a small child sat on the handlebars, speeding past you at that exact moment. Jaywalking is illegal, guys.
