In news that will be of interest to the city's selfie-taking, brunch-frequenting snowflakes (the author of this article included), Shanghai is apparently the 76th best city in the world for millennials. According to apartment search engine Nestpick’s ‘Millennial City Ranking’, we ranked 76th out of the 110 best cities to live out your freelancing, avocado-eating, Instagramming, Tinder-swiping, apartment-sharing years.

Berlin, Montreal, London, Amsterdam and Toronto made up the top five, with Shanghai ranking as the seventh best city in Asia, behind Bangkok (42), Beijing (49), Kuala Lumpur (53), Hong Kong (57), Taipei (62), and Seoul (65) and five places ahead of Tokyo (81). Maybe concentrate less on robots and more on kale salads in the future, eh, Tokyo?

Nestpick’s 2018 survey ranked 110 cities based on the major aspects of city life – jobs, housing, transport and tolerance – as well as things like good-quality nightlife and internet speed, with the weightings of each category being adjusted to reflect what is most important to millennials.

Shanghai scored highly for employment, food, and beer and was joint first place with Beijing in terms of access to contraception. So, yeah, we can drink all of the beers and we've got condoms for days. Where Shanghai didn't score too well was health, internet speed (can't guess why) and LGBT friendliness – openness in the city, safety and legal rights, as well as attraction to LGBT travellers.

Also, rather strangely, we received a score of zero out of ten for festivals. The data obviously didn't take into account Ultra, edc, and all the other festivals Shanghai has to offer, but then again may have just rendered most of our offerings null and void due to the seemingly neverending (although totally worth it) Line 11 metro ride out to Disney Resort station...

Despite this arguably low ranking, we still think Shanghai is the number one city for millennials... although, of course, we might be a bit biased. There's a whole host of late-night activities, stuff to do on the cheap, Instagram-worthy locations and more. Those are the things millennials are supposed to like, right?
