This is why your Didi rides have been so cheap recently

Heng Hui Mei TimeOutShanghai 2019-04-11

You may have noticed that your Didi rides have been super cheap recently, like, ridiculously cheap. Ever since Meituan Dianping decided to venture into the ride-hailing industry, both Meituan and Didi have been competing more fiercely than ever before, each vying for that number one spot.

Meituan has been giving its new users hongbao to use towards their rides.

While Didi has been treating users with pretty significant discounts, last week saying you can get a ride for as low as 0RMB.

However, the price war hasn't been without its victims. Due to Meituan offering its drivers such generous subsidies (e.g. drivers who earn at least 2,200RMB in a week receive an 800RMB bonus), out-of-town drivers (drivers without a local number plate or household registration) have been coming to work in Shanghai and as a result have been fined by the Shanghai Municipal Transportation Commission, according to Sixth Tone.

We aren't sure how long these discounts are going to continue – it's only a matter of time before one company emerges victorious and monopolises the market. In the meantime, though, let's enjoy our even cheaper rides.
