Shanghai continues to earn that informal 'city of superlatives and super-laxatives' title that I just now made up and assigned. Already, we know it's among the world's wealthiest, safest and most livable cities. Now, and again for the sixth time, Shanghai has topped the 'Amazing China – the most attractive Chinese cities in the eyes of foreigners' rankings for 2017, according to SHINE.

This non-ambiguous, to-the-point designation shouldn't come as a surprise to anybody who knows Shanghai, foreigners especially. After all, the rankings are determined via a survey of only foreigners living in Mainland China. The survey was started in 2010 by the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs (SAFEA) in Beijing and it boils down a variety of foreigner-living concerns into four grading metrics: government administration capacity, foreigner-friendly policies, work environment and living environment.

Just behind Shanghai in the rankings are Beijing, Hefei, Qingdao, Shenzhen, Hangzhou, Suzhou, Chengdu, Nanjing and Guangzhou. SAFEA has not released the full details of the survey yet, but once they can do you can be sure that other cities will be taking notes on what makes Shanghai a city that foreigners can settle down in.
