Going to the barbershop should be about more than just the haircut. The Fixx, one of the newest men’s style salons to set up shop in town, also places a big emphasis on on getting the soundtrack right. For them this includes all things hip hop and rap, from ’80s and ‘90s classics to new hits and mixes from emerging China artists.

A, erm…shift from their typical music festivals and event pop-ups the permanent space is a new concept from Shanghai artist and event management company SHFT. This weekend The Fixx team will be kicking things off with an opening party between 3 and 8pm. At the launch, bites will be supplied by shake and burger spot Charlie’s and expect Kin J and SHFT’s own resident DJs on the decks.

Admittedly the haircuts themselves are also pretty important. Here, internationally trained barbers Lulu and Jodyrich wield the shears and razors, offering full haircuts (300RMB), braids and beard trims. A beer or whiskey is included with each service and this weekend in honour of their launch, a free pair of Chuck Taylors will be thrown in as well (subject to availability).

With just three chairs the space is small and intimate, but also likely to fill up quickly so be sure to book ahead.

The Fixx 848 Shaanxi Bei Lu, near Changping Lu. Sat 2. 3-8pm (159 0085 4779).
