Summer might be quickly drawing to a close, but the holiday vibes are still going strong with a whole load of festivals rolling into the region over the coming weeks and months. Split Works' eclectic Concrete & Grass fest returns this weekend, Spring Wave Festival next weekend, and Taiwan's Simple Life is planning an ambitious takeover of Xuhui Riverside for all Golden Week. Plus, after a bumpy ride – with cancellations in both Beijing and Shanghai – it looks like EDM fest Ultra will finally make its Beijing debut this weekend. Then, only slightly further afield, there's Hong Kong's Clockenflap in November (leave yourself an extra day for travel and you might even be able to take the high-speed train there – see post below).

But before you start booking your tickets, first things first: here are Shanghai's top shops to put together your perfect festival looks.

Scroll to the bottom of the post for more details on the upcoming festivals – both at home and (not too far) away.

For bold prints that’ll look great in photos

Recently opened beside Uptown Record’s basement space, Abandon stocks bright vintage pieces sourced mainly from Japan and the United States. Prices start at about 50RMB for bold-patterned button-ups and the store also has a solid choice of accessories like sandals, leather bags and jewellery.

For one-of-a-kind market finds

It seems that wholesale markets like Golden Glory are few and far between in Shanghai these days, and the ones that are around are prime targets for demolition. While this Pudong half-vintage, half-wholesale market is still open for business, find flowy second-hand dresses ideal for when the city feels more like a steam room and bright kimonos from Japan hovering around 100RMB. Golden Glory also stocks wholesale market usual suspects like casual men’s and women’s clothing.

For statement accessories and vintage sunnies

Find statement accessories like vintage costume jewellery and sunnies at Old Xuhui consignment store Pawnstar, where a wander through the space feels like having free reign on your super stylish grandmother’s closet. With rack upon rack of clothes, shoes and bags from the likes of Louis Vuitton and Christian Dior, gently loved designer goodies are also a speciality here.

📍64 Fenyang Lu, near Fuxing Zhong Lu.

DOE

For hypebeasts

For a strong streetwear look, pay a visit to the godfathers of Shanghai streetwear DOE. The company’s pared-down Xintiandi shop is part café, part casual boutique. Inside, shelves are lined with t-shirts and windbreakers, bucket hats and bags, as well as the company’s eponymous label (t-shirts start at 369RMB). The space also has a big selection of men’s and women’s sneakers from 699RMB.

Culture Matters

For perfect dance-in-the-mud shoes

Comfortable and affordable: Feiyues are an obvious Shanghai music festival shoe choice. Stock up on the city’s favourite sneaker last-minute at any brick-and-mortar branch of Culture Matters which carries the classics, seasonal collections and artist collaborations from 95RMB.

📍206 Wulumuqi Zhong Lu, near Wuyuan Lu. Multiple locations.

Peacebird

For trendy streetwear and last-minute shoppers

Popular youth streetwear brand Peacebird’s collections are largely trend-driven, which means right now you’ll find accessories like bum bags, dresses paired with chunky sneakers and athletic wear nods to the ’90s. The brand has plenty of stores around town, but you’re better off sticking to the official shop on Tmall.

JZ Festival

Shanghai's long-running jazz fest returns – with a new location for 2018. Simple Life

Taiwanese festival brand Simple Life has decided to switch locations (from the Expo park to Xuhui Riverside) this year. Knowing what the kids want these days, they're going with a heavy dose of hip pop – Rap of China judge and Taiwanese rap god MC Hotdog will be there, along with his RoC team member Lexie Liu, and rap group MJ116. Not into that? There's also plenty of indie-rock, with Omnipotent Youth Society sure to be a big draw, Shanghai's own Anti-Dogs in the mix, and Shaoxing's Little Wizard also making an appearance.

📍Xuhui Riverside Public Open Space, Dongan Lu, near Longteng Dadao. Mon 1-Sun 7 Oct. Midday-10pm.

Clockenflap 2018

One of Hong Kong's biggest live music events returns this November. The first round of the lineup includes Interpol, Khalid, David Byrne, Caribou, The Vaccines, Wolf Alice and much more.

In addition to the live music, the three-day harbour-front event also promises a range of other attractions plus a slew of food and drink stalls.

📍Central Harbourfront, Hong Kong. Fri 9-Sun 11 Nov. 5-11pm (Fri 9), midday-11pm (Sat 10-Sun 11). 800-870RMB; 1,460RMB (three-day pass presale). Extract QR code to book tickets.
