When we say week, you say end. Week...

Niigata Rice Onigiri Workshop with Yamaga Yohei

Photograph: courtesy XIME

Onigiri is a triangular shaped Japanese rice ball, often made with seasoned rice, fillings and wrapped with nori – a bento box staple or the perfect snack on-the-go. Wherever and however you enjoy it, this workshop will teach you how to make four different types.

📍 XIME Restaurant, First Floor, 1-B, 989 Changle Lu, near Changshu Lu. Sun 11. 2.30-5pm. 120-150RMB.

One of Shanghai's best bands play a hometown show as part of their nationwide tour.

📍 Yuyintang Park, B1, 1398 Yuyuan Lu, near Dingxi Lu. Sat 10. 9pm-late. 100RMB; 70RMB (presale).

Arrogant BBQ

Stone Brewing is teaming up with Heartland Brothers and Smoke KCQ to throw an outdoor barbecue party celebrating the 21st anniversary of Arrogant Bastard Ale. They’ll be serving a variety of Berkshire pork sausages and pork ribs cooked with Arrogant Consortia beers. There will also be a spicy sausage eating contest, and participants will have the chance to win Arrogant beer and Heartland Brothers products.

📍 Stone Brewing Tap Room Shanghai, 1107 Yuyuan Lu, near Jiangsu Lu. Sat 10. 11.30am-4.30pm. 100RMB.

Venom

Venom, a slick-skinned alien ‘symbiote’ who first plagued Marvel’s Peter Parker back in a 1986 comic, has a Wikipedia entry roughly 10-metres long. That’s not to say that the villain deserves his own film... But, he's got one. Flinching when it should be in-your-face and entirely surprise-free, Venom won‘t satisfy either uber-fans or the unconverted. Go for the CGI and accidental comedic value. Click for more films in cinemas this month.

📍 On general release from Fri 9.

Kombucha DIY Workshop

You've heard of it, you've seen it at the supermarket, but what exactly is kombucha and how do you make it at home? This workshop will teach you just that and why the fermented probiotic tea is so good for you. Every attendee will leave with their own SCOBY and home brewing kombucha kit. Find out more here.

📍 naked HUB, Fifth Floor, 89 Taixing Lu, near Nanjing Xi Lu. Sat 10. 4-5.30pm. 299RMB.

Alter. Rooftop Party ft a Special Guest

For the very last of Alter.'s rooftop dances of the year, the crew has arranged for a super secret special guest – an international booking that we can't tell you about but who we guarantee will get things popping.

📍 The Beach House, Second Floor, 758 Julu Lu, near Fumin Lu. Sun 11. 2-10pm. 150RMB; 120RMB (presale). Price includes a drink.

The Molds

The Molds have had kind of a rocky history, but they can still turn it on on stage when the mood takes them and having just released their debut album after over a decade as a band, this should be one of those occasions. Expect retro-tinged garage rock with plenty of swagger.

📍 Yuyintang, 851 Kaixuan Lu, near Yanan Xi Lu. Sat 10. 9pm-late. 120RMB; 100RMB (presale).

Cindy Sherman

Not one to miss, this is Cindy Sherman’s first major retrospective in China. The exhibition features 128 iconic works that span the artist’s 40-plus-year career, alongside documentary materials and archival footage. Through photography, Sherman tackled power relations, identity and the impact of the male gaze. The exhibition tracks her creative development from the 1970s to the present and will also present nine new works for the first time anywhere in the world.

📍 Fosun Foundation, 600 Zhongshan Dong Er Lu, near Dongmen Lu. Wed 7 until 13 Jan 2019. 10am-8pm (Thu, Sat); 10am-6pm (Tue, Wed, Fri, Sun). 90RMB. Extract the QR code to purchase tickets.
