What's that coming over the hill is it a weekend, is it a weekend? Incredibly niche Welsh indie rock band references aside, we have reached another Shanghai weekend and, as usual, there's a lot going on. Read on for our picks of what's going down. 



Fosters4Hangzhou Adoption Day

The Rooster is partnering up with Fosters4Hangzhou to help give our canine friends in need a new home here in Shanghai. Drop by to see if you can find a furry friend for yourself. Contact 'eastisland911' or 'alabamaG' via WeChat for more information on Sunday's event.

M Talks China: River of Plastic

From M on the Bund and Glam, M Talks China presents River of Plastic: The Plastic Problem with Monika Lin, Assistant Professor of Arts at NYU Shanghai. River of Plastic investigates the creation, distribution and effects of the plastic industry.

#WomensWave in Shanghai

In support of the Annual Global Women's March, Democrats Abroad is hosting a screening of RBG, a documentary about legendary US Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. After the film, there will be discussion and a postcard-writing campaign. This will also be the first meet and greet of the Shanghai Women's Caucus.

Shanghai Soul Club at Specters

Check out Specters' new digs at its all-vinyl Northern Soul and Motown night with guest DJ Glen Walton, and Sacco and Baron Van West on wax with plenty of soul selections. Expect a mash-up of contemporary and '60s classic soul, girl groups and tracks from the legends like Otis, Aretha and Sam and Dave.

Empowerment Performances and Open Mic

Community performance group Cum Again's first open mic/empowerment performance will feature musicians, comedians, artists and poets and promises expression and positive conversation. There will be prizes up for grabs, including candy, lube, t-shirts and more.

PodFest China!

Whether you make a podcast, want to make a podcast or just love to listen to them, this half-day event is right up your street. There will be talks by prominent Chinese and foreign podcasters in China, industry insiders and a live recording of a brand-new podcast from live story-telling series Unravel.

Burns Supper

The Funk Show: The Music of James Brown, Rick James, Prince and more

Get up and get into it: Shake brings the floor-filling funk for their first big concert of 2019. Courtney Knott and the full band take you on a voyage of music by James Brown, Parliament, Marvin Gaye, Prince and more. Expect big horns, bigger grooves and downbeats heavier than a '75 Cadillac.

All Star Bash

True Legend Group is celebrating its 15th anniversary at Big Bamboo over at Laowai Jie. There's going to be a raffle, free-flow drinks, finger foods, eating and drinking contests, cheerleading, gift bags and more. Dress code is 'sports stars.'

Faux Fighters

Foos tribute band, Faux Fighters takes over Harley's – expect all the best hits spanning Foo Fighters' nine studio albums. Opening the night is Loudspeaker, the oldest running metal band in Shanghai and rock outfit, Moaning Lisa will also be performing. Dave Grohl fans, don't miss out on this one.
