10 brilliant things to do this weekend in Shanghai

It's Friday again and time to enjoy the weekend ahead because – you guessed it – there's some pretty cool stuff going on. Get fancy at a wine tasting and buffet, shuck and slurp fresh oysters at a block party or catch an exhibition full of the works of Speed Racer and Final Fantasy creator Yoshitaka Amano. Oh, and don't forget to check out the new Godzilla movie while you’re at it. Read on for the best stuff to do this weekend.


UVA Wine Tasting and Buffet

UVA Wine Bar will be hosting a one-night-only wine tasting session with four of its new wines. The session includes a buffet with Italian delicacies. RSVP at 180 1862 8320.

Oyster Shuck Off Block Party

Trendy bar and eatery The Cannery is hosting a block party. Expect a shellfish boil, oyster bars and fun competitions like the Shuck 'n' Suck. Seafood comes courtesy of The Cannery, Oysterlicious and The Nest.

La Festa Della Republica at The Fellas

Celebrate Italy's National Day at The Fellas with great views from the terrace, music, cocktails and traditional Italian dishes. A guest DJ will be on deck, and chef Andrea Rano will serve up a free tasting of his spaghetti recipes from midnight onwards. Reserve at 6316 9119.

Marc Melià and The Mirrors

Belgium synthfreak Marc Melià will embark on an eight-city China tour and will put up a performance where, unlike the vast majority of live electronic music acts, each song is crafted by hand at every venue without the use of pre-recorded sequences. Experimental psychedelic rock trio The Mirrors will share the stage with him here in Shanghai.

Mixmag pres Q'hey and Sakiko Osawa

Q'hey (Masaya Kyuhei) started DJing in 1989 and has been a seminal figure of Japan’s club scene ever since. From club events to massive outdoor music festivals, Q'hey is the artist who always surprises. After years of touring and international exposure, he remixed the likes of Jeff Mills and began managing the radio program, REBOOT, named after the iconic Tokyo underground techno party he started in the mid-‘90s.

Throwback Friday Skate Party

Gear up and get skating to R&B and pop music from the '90s and '00s with DJ Sivle at RIINK. Even better, there will be drink deals all night long and free skates if you get there before 8pm. The bar and kitchen will be open from 6pm till late.

CRITICA

CRITICA is an annual arts festival that explores how art is able to promote social inclusion. Godzilla: King of the Monsters

If monsters are your thing, then there's quite a few in this sequel to 2014's Godzilla reboot. A crypto-zoological agency called Monarch faces off with creatures of titanic proportions, including the mighty Godzilla and other monsters like Mothra, Rodan and now his ultimate nemesis, a three-headed beast called King Ghidorah. When these ancient supersized monsters start vying for supremacy, humanity's very existence is put under threat.

Yoshitaka Amano: Fantasy in Daylight

The creator behind Speed Racer, G-Force and video game franchise Final Fantasy, Yoshitaka Amano is a master who blurs the boundaries of fine art and Japanese ACG (anime, comics and games). The exhibition will show the full spectrum of Amano’s career, with nearly 200 original paintings, 32 newly created large-scale hand drawings, five animated films and a Shanghai Girl series that he created exclusively for the exhibition.
