10 brilliant things to do this weekend in Shanghai

If you haven't been talking trash with your friends this week (literally), this weekend’s a good time to meet up and do it. Shanghai’s got a mini flea market going on, a vegan brunch, a collective art exhibition and tons of nightlife events to keep you entertained. Here’s what’s going on this weekend.


Abandon Mini Flea Market

In celebration of its anniversary, Abandon will throw a pop-up flea market at Jin Hua. The Yunnan restaurant will host ten booths, all selling vintage and pre-loved clothes.

Vegan Brunch at M Glam

M Glam's monthly vegan brunch is back, this time with a menu including Oaxacan-style mango and paw paw, seaweed-crusted rice cakes and rum balls with coconut sorbet. Do your body and the planet some good.

Two Hands Burger Pop-Up

Tonight's the second (and last night) of Two Hands Burger, a pop-up from chef Chris Zhu (formerly Bird) and the burger enthusiasts at Taste Collective. The menu includes a smashed burger and some mouth-watering guest stars: hot fried chicken meets hot pot, brownie sundaes, natural wines, cold beers and crisp whiskey highballs. Burgers from 50RMB.

The Secret Life of Pets 2

The not-so-secret adventures of pets continue in this second instalment from director Chris Renaud. When his owners take a trip to the countryside, Max the Jack Russell Terrier (Patton Oswalt) must face the obstacles of a new and terrifying place. Then he meets Rooster (Harrison Ford), a seasoned farm dog, who helps him adjust to his new life.

ART JUNGLE

ART JUNGLE is a collective art exhibition featuring talented local creatives like tattoo artist SANOT AMK, illustrator Dream Chen, graffiti artist Mattia Muglia, screen printing artist Nini Sum and Michelle & Cian from TONIK Prints. Sip on Peddlers Gin cocktails inspired by the artists, and then take home original illustrations and printings (or even a tattoo). Yeti DJs will also be on site to curate an ART JUNGLE-inspired playlist.

The Drawing Hand

For the sixth time since 2007, Danysz once again presents The Drawing Hand, an exhibition of drawings from artists represented by the gallery (think Ludo and Maleonn) and elsewhere. The result is a space filled with artworks made of strings, inks, paper cuttings, writings and sculptures that make you rethink what constitutes drawing, especially in the context of Chinese language that uses the word ‘drawing’ and ‘painting’ interchangeably.

POPSUDA

POPASUDA is back at DADA, including an eight-hour global set from Skinny Brown that will excavate the sonic nooks and crannies of Africa, South America, India, China and the Caribbean. Expect filthy dancehall, Ugandan techno and some polyrhythmic bustle/menacing synths straight from the streets of Durban.

Spanish Town

Spanish Town's summer series unites Nice and Catchoumi of France, alongside the OG Spanish crew: Poltxa, Ivan Barbero, Marcos Godoy and the newly indoctrinated Pilas. After two months of productions and new tunes, they are back with a solid wave of tech house and minimal tech. These five guys have logged more than 50 years in the music scene and across Europe. Expect a barrage of percussive tracks designed to keep the mind awake and the body dancing.

SoundScape's World Music Night

This traveling musical group composed of unique musicians from all corners of the globe is known for blending Eastern and Western musical elements to create sounds like you've never heard before. Experience a night of musical storytelling with melodies from Africa, Tibet and ancient India.

Sensory Canvas

Sensory Canvas is a peculiar collection of pieces that aims to have its audience rethink how human perception works. Featuring nine different works from eight artists, this exhibit aims to help deconstruct preconceptions of reality.
