The best things to do this weekend in Shanghai

Shanghai summers almost make you want to work extra hours rather than to step outside of your office's AC... but there are a million reasons why you should wrap it up and start your weekend already. This weekend, we've got an eco design market, an LGBTQ+ block party, a Women and Sustainability Summit and plenty of nightlife activities. Here's what you can look forward to this weekend.


Women & Sustainability Summit

Listen to a panel of accomplished speakers, all women battling climate change as young entrepreneurs, CEOs, advisors and ecologists. Speakers include Alizeé CCM, founder of Zer'oWaste Shanghai; Olivia Cotes-James, founder and CEO of LUÜNA Naturals; Paula Mueller, founder of EQSCHOALRS and member of the board of directors at the International Professional Women's Society; Helen Yang, chief advisor at the Research Institute for Environmental Innovation in Suzhou; and Maria Souza, social ecologist and program manager at Green Initiatives.

Live Green Love Eco Markets

A joint project by Eco Design Fair, Simply Eco and Kerry Parkside, the Live Green Love Eco Market is a series of pop-up events that aim to blend specialty food merchants, environmentally-friendly designers and makers, entertainers, fitness gurus, green innovators and you.

Paint Fest II

Paint Fest is back, this time presenting Lve Wang and Yu Wei Lin, a duo of local urban artists who will live paint two large canvases. Besides the live-painting, there will also be a pop-up exhibition showcasing the works of three other artists: Wei Ding, Feat and Han. Experimental beats come courtesy of DJ DORA and there will be free beer and Baozzas all night long.

NTS Radio Live from Shanghai

After two months' absence where China Social Club took NTS to Jakarta and Seoul, it’s time to welcome them back to Uptown RnB. NTS Radio Live from Shanghai this month features China Social Club and a special triple header from Shanghai bosses HYMN, ANGELVS and E L F.

SHFT pres Noizu

Los Angeles-based Noizu is quickly climbing through the ranks of house music, making his debut on the Chris Lake and Skrillex-curated ‘HOWSLA’ in 2017 with ‘Lasers’ before catching the eyes and ears of French label boss, Tchami. Noizu’s first official remix came when he was asked by DJ Snake himself to tackle his Lauv featured smash, ‘A Different Way'.

BARBARISM Vol 14

A monthly club night for civilised barbarians. BARBARISM is an escape for those who work hard all week and need to experience rawness and real emotions. Expect dancefloor-filling and boundary-pushing new hip hop, club trax, forgotten classics, familiar vocals in strange new contexts and songs you never knew you needed.

Medusa x House of Kawakubo

Medusa/House of Kawakubo have officially Kai Kai’d... and gurl a Vogue Ball is born. To celebrate your inner Party Monster, the theme of the evening will be Club Kid Fantasy. There will be categories for all the legendary children to stomp the runway, kiki and snatch trophies in the fiercest gender bending creations. The categories begin at 10.30pm sharp and voguing music from all dimensions will begin afterwards.

Paint The Street Rainbow Block Party

Shaanxi Bei Lu is getting fabulously lit on Saturday, July 27 for Sumerian's Paint The Street Rainbow Block Party. From 3pm until late, participating venues (The Rooster, Sumerian, Jin Hua, Ole Kitchen and Roxie) will be serving up a special themed cocktails in association with Peddlers Gin. Pick up your LGBTQ+ passport at Sumerian Coffee next door, and then swing by The Rooster to collect your special stamp. Once you collect five stamps, you'll receive surprise goodies at select venues.

The White Storm 2: Drug Lords

Once members of the Ching Hing Gang, Jizo and Tin were both the right-hand men of the gang's leader. Fast forward 15 years and the former is Hong Kong's biggest mob boss, while latter is a business tycoon who offers a $100 million for taking out the city's top crook.

Duet: A Tan Ping Retrospective

Yuz Museum presents a retrospective featuring the work of Tan Ping, one of the most important figures in the Chinese Contemporary Art scene. From oil paintings that extend way off the canvas to a woodcut work that resulted from carving a single line for six hours, the exhibition is a duet between art forms Tan has attempted to master over the course of his career.
