10 excellent things to do this weekend in Shanghai

So the weather's not great, but that shouldn't be a problem this weekend. Shanghai's always got plenty of stuff to keep you busy. We've got tons of new art openings, a few movie screenings and releases around town, a charity dinner that raises awareness for Suicide Prevention Month and a really cool drag show for freaks and geeks only (aren't we all?). Here are our top picks.
Nourish: Picnic for Life

Eat for a good cause at this celebration of wellness in the F&B industry on the eve of Suicide Prevention Day. This year, organisers are also putting on an industry day with wellness workshops and activities.

Free Solo

See a daredevil rock climber rise to the occasion of his greatest challenge without safety ropes. Already a gripping watch, Free Solo becomes extra special when it widens out to accommodate the people hanging on to Alex Honnold's vertical trajectory.

Your footsteps are the road for there is no road

Curated by Annabelle Ténèze, each piece in this exhibition (the fifth held in China to showcase Marcel Duchamp Prize winners) deals with the concept of roads, literal or metaphorical. From taking a stroll on foot to the launch of a rocket, it asks why we end up leaving certain places either by will or by force.

Movie Screening: Raise the Red Lantern

Set in the 1920s, this is the story of Songlian (Gong Li) who becomes the third concubine of a wealthy man and enters a household of schemers and plotters. In Raise the Red Lantern, renowned director Zhang Yimou's cinematography comes to life with opulent visuals and sumptuous use of colour.

Justin Rivera Live: Comedy and Magic

Combining talents for both stand-up comedy and magic, Justin Rivera has made television appearances including on America's Got Talent and Fast Track to Fame and on Comedy Central with Dave Attell and Adam Carolla. Now, as part of an Asia tour, he's bringing his brand of humour to the Shanghai Comedy Bunker.

Fu Shuai Solo Exhibition: Xia Xi

Known for his hyper-realistic portrayal of textures that remind viewers of rusty industrial metals, Fu Shuai's upcoming solo show can be seen as a rebellion against the omnipresence of fluorescent light experienced in the Digital Age.

Cold Pursuit

A remake of his own 2014 Norwegian thriller, Hans Petter Moland's film is set in a fictional ski town in Colorado and follows snowplough driver Nels Coxman (Liam Neeson) and his journey of revenge after finding out his son's death of overdose had something to do with a more complex drug operation.

That Funk Show Vol 3

Shake brings the raw sounds of James Brown, Marvin Gaye, P-Funk, Rick James and more this weekend. Courtney Knott and The Shanghai Sheiks are your conductors on this journey through space and sound. Dinner from 6pm and music starts at 10.30pm.

Nerd-a-Licious: A Drag Show for Freaks & Geeks

Heritage Eats

Hosted by Austin Hu (Heritage by Madison), the Heritage Eats food festival is all about exploring cultural heritage through food. More than 20 Shanghai chefs including Blake Thornley (Blackbird and Oha Eatery), Danyi Gao (Shake and Bunchacha) and Sergio Moreno (The Commune Social) will prepare dishes from their own ‘heritage’, be that a grandmother’s recipe, a childhood memory or something that represents where they come from.
