18 great things to do in Shanghai this week

Damn, it's getting cold. Still, there are tons of activities in Shanghai to keep your blood pumping during the holiday season. This week, we've got a few Christmas markets, the World Café Expo, a Red Ribbon Gala and Troye Sivan is in town (again).

B人BEL Magazine No 2 Launch


B人BEL Magazine is a bilingual publication that showcases the lives of people in China through written stories, interviews, photography, illustration and poetry, highlighting the stories of groups and individuals neglected by mainstream media. Its second issue is out now, and the publication is celebrating the launch with an evening filled with performances, music and talks.

2019 World Café Expo


The Café Expo will host more than 300 exhibitors and 500 brands all related to coffee. It will also be selling tea, baked goods and kitchen appliances and equipment for brewing coffee, among other items.

Red Ribbon Gala 2019


The Red Ribbon Gala for World AIDS Day is this weekend and will include a formal dinner with live entertainment, presentations, raffles and an auction throughout the evening, followed by an afterparty at Bleu Bar. All the proceeds go to Shanghai Qingai Health Centre to raise awareness of HIV/AIDS prevention among adolescents and the community, while advocating the elimination of discrimination caused by HIV/AIDS.

Jingan Christkindlmarkt


The traditional German Christkindlmarkt (aka Christmas market), returns to Shanghai. There will be tons of food including baked apples, chestnuts, gingerbread, mulled wine and other regional specialties from Germany and other countries.

Wellington Winter Wonderland Bazaar


Join Wellington’s winter wonderland on Friday 29, where there will be more than 90 vendors on-site, activities for children, photo opportunities with Santa and tasty food and drinks, including mulled wine.

Trashboat: a stand-up comedy show


Trashboat is a stand-up comedy show featuring some of Shanghai’s top comics. In between stand-up sets, audience members will play games and win prizes – and it’s only 1RMB. The line-up includes Jorge Castellanos, Kade Moore, Gene George and Kurt Dunsing, among other comedians.

Shanghai Secret Disco


To accommodate all of Shanghai's disconauts, boogie queens and funk masters, Secret Disco has moved to MAO Livehouse's Electronic Studio. Maintaining its house party vibe, DJs CFP, Bonzo, ALEPAY and Kougar take you on a discosmic adventure, while hostess Queen Yi keeps things groovy.

21st Century Funk


Courtney Knott and Shake's six-piece band interpret the music of Anderson .Paak, Thundercat, Lizzo, Snoop, Daft Punk and more at Shanghai's house of funk and soul. Dinner from 6pm; live music starts at 10.30pm sharp. Dress code: 2020s vs 2030s.

Allie X Live in Shanghai


Drawing comparisons to Chvrches, Ellie Goulding and pre-Silent Shout Knife with her airy yet edgy electro-pop, Canadian singer/songwriter Allie X made her debut in early 2014 with a pair of attention-getting singles: 'Catch' and 'Prime'.

Barbarism Vol 17


This is a monthly club night for civilised barbarians to experience rawness and real emotions in a fog of new hip hop, club trax, forgotten classics, familiar vocals in strange new contexts and songs you never knew you needed.

Troye Sivan The Bloom Tour


Australian pop singer Troye Sivan brings his The Bloom Tour to Shanghai again following his successful performance earlier this year. Besides Shanghai, Troye Sivan will also be performing in Shenzhen and Chengdu.

Sam Tsui The Gold Jacket Tour


Sam Tsui was among the first musicians to establish a hugely popular music-focused channel on YouTube. To date, his videos – which include covers, medleys and mash-ups – have amassed over 500 million hits on Youtube alone. Each new release, including his debut original album Make It Up, and his brand new 2018 album Trust contribute to his ever-expanding worldwide fanbase.

Frozen II

The Shape of Time: Highlights of the Centre Pompidou Collection vol 1


Kickstarting a five-year collaboration between the Centre Pompidou (Paris) and the West Bund Museum (Shanghai), the 18-month opening exhibition titled The Shape of Time: Highlights of the Centre Pompidou Collection vol 1 will be on display until May 2021. Expect a comprehensive introduction to contemporary and modern art history through more than 100 masterpieces from the world's major artists including Duchamp, Picasso, Kandinsky, Miro, Beuys, Ding Yi, Cai Guo-qiang and Li Yongbin.

teamLab Borderless Shanghai


This is Tokyo-based collective teamLab’s first permanent outpost outside of Japan. The sprawling ‘museum without a map’ (covering 6,600sqm) is home to nearly 50 productions including ‘Forest of Lamps’, where a seemingly infinite number of lamps hang in mid-air in a mirrored room and ‘En Tea House’, in which flowers bloom indefinitely in the teacups visitors hold.

Titanic the Musical


Based on real people aboard the most legendary ship in the world, Titanic the Musical is a stunning and stirring production focusing on the hopes, dreams and aspirations of her passengers who each boarded with stories and personal ambitions of their own. With music and lyrics by Maury Yeston and a book by Peter Stone, the original Broadway production won five Tony Awards including Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book.
