Once upon a time,

From University to the World

(From University to the World)活动。

How Much Do We Know About Each Other?

On whether portrayals of college life in movies and TV series reflect reality:
When I studied in the US, I noticed that a lot of American students worked really hard. For them, it definitely wasn't all about parties, sex, drinking and all that. The portrayals of college life in pop culture aren't always accurate.
I actually think such portrayals are spot on. Of course, there are American students who study real hard, but for the most part, college life involves lots of partying, sex, drinking and even drugs. It comes down to individuals, though. You know, what you want to get out of your college experience, what your goal or purpose is.

On whether students know what their goal/purpose is:
It's true that for a lot of Chinese students, the most important goal is to land a decent job after graduation. But that's not my case. For me, the goal is to experience different cultures and listen to different perspectives. I want to broaden my horizons, that's why I chose NYU Shanghai.
I agree with that wholeheartedly! College life is more about broadening your horizons, embracing new experiences and learning about different cultures.
That's why having a goal is so important. Lots of Chinese students slack off in college too, because they studied so hard for so long to pass the college entrance examination. They figure, I'm finally in college, YAY, LIBERATION!!! So they play hooky, party, drink and whatever, just like lots of American students. On the other hand, I see many hard-working American students as well. For them, the most important goal in college is to try and be independent. How do you do that? You study hard, so when you graduate, you can find a good job and stop living off of your parents.
See? We are not that different. (laughs) Although, I must say we don't mean to judge anyone. If you are sick of being a nerd, and your goal is to become more social and popular, who are we to say you shouldn't party, drink, smoke and whatnot? Stay away from drugs, though.

On where American students get their gas money:
I know some of you are wondering: Isn't the economy in a somewhat slump right now? The thing is, most part-time jobs in the US don't require a lot of experience, or a degree. So college students can still find one with relative ease. You know, washing dishes, being a waiter or a waitress, that kind of thing.
I'm not from a well-off family. In fact, I had to put my studies on hold for two years and work full time. When I resumed my college life, it took some getting used to. I had to study extra hard so that I could keep up with other students. (thumbs-up from the audience)

On whether American students like to take selfies, and whether they edit their selfies before putting them online:

This is a global phenomenon. Everybody takes selfies these days, not just American students. (laughs)
I'm really proud of the fact that I never edit my selfies. I take them, and directly post them on social media. I'm confident that way. (laughs)
I'm Chinese, but I still want to answer this question. I don't like taking selfies. I'm a foodie, and I take pictures of FOOD! (laughs)
Me too! Some of my friends say I'm evil because I tend to post food pictures late at night. You know what? I always say, "Hey, I'm posting these pictures so my family can know more about Chinese culture!" (laughs, applause from the audience)

On what to do if one's roommate studies really, really hard and puts them to shame:

Education isn't just about academics. Learning to interact with other people, getting to know the city you live in, embracing new experiences and adventures... They are all part of the learning process. There's no need to feel guilty or ashamed if we don't focus on textbooks 24/7.
Exactly! Education isn't and shouldn't be all about GPA and getting good scores. Social experiences and volunteer activities are also vitally important.
