"If you want something said, ask a man. If you want something done, ask a woman."

-- Margaret Thatcher

Brexit means Brexit, and we are going to make a success of it.”

I do not think it would be right for me to try to be the captain that steers our country to its next destination."

Former London mayor Boris Johnson, a potential favorite to win the key to 10 Downing Street, announced he would not be a contender in the race to become the next prime minister of Britain. Gove told the BBC that he was standing to be Conservative leader after deciding "reluctantly but firmly" Boris Johnson was not capable of uniting the party or the UK.

The Independent referred to him as the latest “rat to jump off sinking Brexit ship”.

Conservative lawmakers have chosen Theresa May and Andrea Leadsom to fight a runoff contest for leadership of the ruling Conservative Party.

Home Secretary Theresa May is a Remain supporter, while Energy Secretary Andrea Leadsom is a leading Leave supporter.

Will a woman be the next British prime minister?

Britain on course for female prime minister

Britain set for second female prime minister

Leadsom made the announcement on Monday, saying that she realised support from 25% of Conservative MPs was not enough “to lead a strong and stable government”.

1956年出生,她和撒切尔夫人一样,毕业于牛津大学,并且都是自学生时代起就积极参加政治活动;

1997年首次当选国会议员,2002年成为保守党第一位女性党魁,2010年起担任内政部大臣一职;

Here is Theresa May’s statement in full.

I am honoured and humbled to have been chosen by the Conservative party to become its leader.

I would like to pay tribute to the other candidates during the election campaign and I would like to pay tribute to Andrea Leadsom for the dignity that she has shown today.

I would also like to pay tribute to David Cameron for the leadership that he has shown our party and our country.

During this campaign my case has been based on three things. First, the need for strong, proven leadership to steer us through what will be difficult and uncertain economic and political times, the need, of course, to negotiate the best deal for Britain in leaving the EU, and to forge a new role for ourselves in the world. Brexit means Brexit, and we are going to make a success of it.

Second, we need to unite our country and, third, we need a strong, new positive vision for the future of our country, a vision of a country that works not for the privileged few but that works for every one of us. Because we are going to give people more control over their lives. And that’s how, together, we will build a better Britain. Thank you.

Here is the full text of what David Cameron said.

Good afternoon. I am delighted that we are not going to have a prolonged conservative leadership election campaign. I think Andrea Leadsom has made absolutely the right decision to stand aside. It is clear Theresa May has the overwhelming support of the Conservative parliamentary party.

I’m also delighted that Theresa May will be the next prime minister. She is strong, she is competent, she’s more than able to provide the leadership the country is going to need in the years ahead and she will have my full support.

Obviously with these changes we now don’t need to have a prolonged period of transition. And so tomorrow I will chair my last cabinet meeting. On Wednesday I will attend the House of Commons for prime minister’s questions. And then after that I expect to go to the Palace and offer my resignation, so we will have a new prime minister in that building behind me by Wednesday evening. Thank you very much.
