deplorables

9月9日晚，希拉里·克林顿在一个私人筹款场合发表了这样一段言论，立刻引起一片哗然，被她的对手称为是希拉里“在这一选战季所犯的最大错误 ”。

To just be grossly generalistic, you can put half of Trump supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables. Right? Racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic, you name it.

希拉里把特朗普半数支持者称为 the basket of deplorables，一篮子啥?

deplorable   adj   [dɪ'plɔːrəb(ə)l] 
Definition: very bad in a way that causes shock, fear, or disgust : deserving to be deplored

deserving censure or contempt 

国内有翻译成“无耻之徒”的，也有“可怜之人”的，其实两个意思都可以。总之这回希拉里是漏嘴讲了“私房话”。

需要强调的是很多字典里deplorable只是个形容词，希拉里非常任性地将它用成了名词，不过《牛津字典》里包罗了这一罕见的、始于19世纪初的名词用法。

在现代英语中，这种形容词加复数的情况也很常见，如 the ancients、the dailies等。

bigot

希拉里的对手，共和党候选人特朗普也从没客气过，用词那是相当的狠呀！

在8月24日密西西比州的一次竞选集会上，特朗普批评希拉里和民主党在选战中利用非洲裔美国人，只关心少数族裔的选票，却不关心他们的未来。然后他就高喊："Hillary Clinton is a bigot!" 

Bigot一词16世纪来源于法语，是法国人对诺曼人的蔑称，引入英语后，指对某种教义、信仰或者意见等盲从的人，更直接点就是“偏执狂”。

再往前追溯，我们就要聊到“邮件门”了。

8月16日，美国联邦调查局(FBI)准备将其对前国务卿希拉里电子邮件调查的问讯笔录以及调查人员发现的所有证据和调查涉及的保密邮件副本移交国会。

讲真，很多外国朋友也不认识redact一词啊：

Definition: 1:  to put in writing :  frame2:  to select or adapt (as by obscuring or removing sensitive information) for publication or release; broadly :  edit3:  to obscure or remove (text) from a document prior to publication or release

很明显，“编写”的意思里有“节选、删减”的内涵。事实是确有知情人士称，这些被移交的文件可能被大量删节，且不会公开发布，将作为保密信息提交给国会。（难道这就是传说中的大事化小，小事化了？）

咳咳，说回redact一词。作为动词，它早在15世纪就开始被使用了，原意是“编辑、选编”，但现在的用法里有了“为了公开发表而刻意地模糊或掩盖某些部分”的意思。感受一下：

Rubicon

8月9日，一贯“大嘴”的特朗普再次祸从口出：他攻击对手的言论被解读为鼓励他人枪杀希拉里，因此招致广泛批评。

其中 MSNBC 广播公司晨间新闻谈话节目《早安，乔》的一个标题是这样的：

The word Rubicon spiked in online lookups on August 10, 2016, following Donald Trump’s insinuation that gun-rights advocates might assassinate Hillary Clinton. The comment drew immediate attention and criticism, including this headline from the web page of  MSNBC’s “Morning Joe”:

Rubicon   noun  [ˈru:bɪkən]
Definition： a bounding or limiting line; especially :  one that when crossed commits a person irrevocably

中文是“界限”的意思，但为啥不在句首还要大写呢？

原来，在古罗马时代，Rubicon是山南高卢与意大利的分界河。公元前49年，凯撒(Caesar)越过此河，宣告与罗马执政庞培(Pompey)决战。

Caesar's crossing of the Rubicon River in 49 B.C. sparked a civil war and ended with him taking charge of the Roman state.

现在，Rubicon一词常见于cross/pass the Rubicon中，意思是“采取断然行动、下重大决心、破釜沉舟”。

古哲有云，人不能两次踏进同一条河流。

不过从媒体报道来看，口无遮拦的特朗普可能已经无数次跨越Rubicon河啦！
