Heyang:

Does this happen in your household? From air conditioners to water coolers, from computers to remote controls, everything is covered with a layer of plastic or crochet that’s carefully wrapped by your dear mother. Moms say this so-called ‘protector’ is absolutely necessary and has been made into an aesthetical marvel. Why do moms do this?

Niu Honglin:

Well I don’t know why do Mom do this, but I have a dream, a dream to tear off the annoying plastic wrapper on the TV remote, so my fingers can have the ultimate pleasure of touching it directly. But if I made it true I can’t imagine whether my mom will throw me out of the window or just kick me out of the door. That is to say, Moms don’t want that.

Heyang:

Well, also Moms sometimes do knitting, so create these crochet.

Niu Honglin:

Homemade.

Heyang:

Yes, they are pretty in color and you can see patterns have been designed and knitted with such great care. Ryan, you don’t appreciate that?

Ryan:

No. It looks tacky. I am sorry. I said it Mom. I said it. Finally I got the courage to say it. It looks tacky. No, my mom doesn’t do this. But you know what my Dad does is kind of like a version of this. Since we are talking about this folks, you know people that put plastic on things like sofa or crochet on whatever. I guess people can put it on pretty much anything, as I understand, I just don’t get it. It doesn’t look nice, maybe it will preserve your couch but people that will see it will think like that looks really tacky. So I think with regards to my Dad, he has a super nice couch but it is overrun with pillows to the point where there is no point in having a couch, because the pillows have covered it. I can’t sit on it.

Heyang:

Sit on the pillow.

Niu Honglin:

Comfortable

Ryan:

You have to like move them all, it’s a lot of work.

Heyang:

Ryan, Know to take the hint when you get one that is your dad doesn’t want your bum on the sofa.

Ryan:

Yeah, I think he actually said that before.

Heyang:

What does that say about you and your mum...

Ryan:

Whatever, whatever.

Heyang:

Ok. So Niu Honglin why are moms doing this in China?

Niu Honglin:

I think now we all have a cellphone in our pocket or by our hands. So is there any of you who don’t have a plastic cover for the screen or a whole body cover for your phone? That is the same mentality there, that is to protect it and keep it nice and new, brand new, like you’ve just got it. And this is the same mentality, so who are we to judge?

Ryan:

No way, no way.

Heyang:

Why?

Ryan:

I don’t drop my couch. I am not like pulling my couch on my pocket. Like, uh, hold on…uh…broken. I should have bought that iphone couch cover. No. Phones are hand held you are using them taking them everywhere. And they are often used elevated above the ground. Why do you need this protective couch cover, sure like maybe your couch cover is gonna get a little bit dirty but still it looks kind of tacky with all this plastic on it, right?

Heyang:

Stop judging the Moms.

Ryan:

Sorry. Sorry Mom

Heyang:

But actually Ryan I don’t think you should be that difficult to understand If you think your sleek, super sexy Iphone7+ deserves protection. Mom thinks ‘my couch deserves protection too.’

‘Because I love my couch,’ ok I am just playing the Mom’s role right here. And you know the refrigerator, I spent good money on that and I want it to last as long as it can. And I want to look good and fancy and nice in my eyes, maybe my son thinks that it is tacky, but you know what I am gonna keep it that way.’

Ryan:

So you are saying ‘I wanna see crocheting over everything that you have in a way of sitting in couches’ or not.

Niu Honglin:

Whatever makes Mom happy.

Ryan:

Yeah, I guess so.

Heyang:

But sometimes it’s a bit too much. Sometimes it’s just overblown. I’ve checked out some of these photos and maybe I will send out some photos on Wechat depends on our editor; she is the queen I don’t want to mess with her, just a small suggestion. Maybe you can check out these photos online that is Moms go to such extreme length into designing and knitting out a whole set of covers for the toilet, for the toilet handle, for where you hold the loo rolls and all kinds of things and that might be going a little bit over the top.

Niu Honglin:

It’s almost like decoration doesn’t matter anymore because everything is covered with the same case, same pattern, same kind of cover.

Heyang:

Because it has to be a set deal.

Ryan:

As you are scrolling through these pictures seeing of all the things that people have crocheted around, you will begin to think that the next thing you will see on these pictures is an airplane crocheted with protective cover. It is just insane what people are covering with crochet. But hey, if that’s your thing, good for you.

Heyang:

Yes. And actually I think we should be more understanding of Mom or of the older generation that is maybe they grew up in an era of scarcity not in an era of abundance as a lot of us are used to these days. So be a little more understanding of their aesthetics and the way of life for the older folks. And that’s what I called a good and considerate Heyang, or a person.
