原来除了做名词城市名外，shanghai还可以用作动词(注意首字母s要小写）。

To shanghai is 

(1) to kidnap someone for service as a sailor, especially by drugging them or using force;

(2) to use fraud compel someone to do something; 

(3) to kidnap. Inflected, the verb makes shanghaied and shanghaiing. 

中文也就是“拐骗、劫持、诱拐、欺诈 ”。

上海人表示很无辜

18世纪，美国航运业快速发展，到上海做生意的商船络绎不绝。

但海上路途遥远，危险重重，很可能就有去无回，所以很少有人愿意当水手。

于是，就出现了“水手贩子”： 在旧金山等地，人贩子通过下药、灌酒、威胁、恐吓各种手段，将大批人弄上商船，迫使他们成为“海上奴隶”。

In the 18th century, long sea voyages were very difficult and dangerous, so people were understandably hesitant to become sailors. But sea captains and shipping companies needed crews to sail their ships, so they gathered sailors any way they could - even if that meant resorting to kidnapping by physical force or with the help of liquor or drugs. 

被胁迫的人醒来后听到的往往是：

"You've been shanghaied!" 

稀里糊涂上了船的水手们搞清楚状况时也总是大呼：

"We are shanghaied!"

后来，shanghai 被用来特指水手贩子诱拐绑架水手的行为。

The word shanghai comes from the name of the Chinese city of Shanghai. People started to use the city's name for that unscrupulous way of obtaining sailors because the East was often a destination of ships that had kidnapped men onboard as crew.

水手贩子这一行，有几个臭名昭著的人物，人称：

Jim "Shanghai" Kelly

（“上海王”吉姆•凯利）

Johnny "Shanghai Chicken" Devine

（“上海鸡”强尼•迪瓦恩）

"Shanghai Joe" of New Bedford

（新贝德福德的“上海老乔”）

这些绰号，也强化了“上海”和“诱拐”之间的联系。

据说他们曾经一个晚上就诱拐了100多人，足足填满了三艘商船。直到美国国会通过 Seamen’s Act of 1915 法案，将 shanghaiing 列为重罪之后，这种抓壮丁的行为才慢慢消失。

说到底，都是美国人干的事，上海只是背黑锅的（心疼我大上海三秒）......
