昨天下午，李克强总理和澳大利亚总理特恩布尔一同出席了在悉尼举行的中澳经贸合作论坛。

Visiting Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and his counterpart Malcolm Turnbull attended the China-Australia Economic and Trade Cooperation Forum held in Sydney on Friday.

李克强向与会的500多名各界人士发表了主旨演讲，表明了坚定推进全球化与自由贸易的信念。

Premier Li said globalization and free trade have contributed to human development and prosperity.

人类能够有今天的发展和繁荣得益于全球化和自由贸易；人们之所以能够有更多的选择，各国能够发挥自己的比较优势，也得益于自由贸易和全球化。虽然这其中产生这样那样的问题，但人类有智慧和能力去解决。我们现在要坚定的是推进的信念。

Thanks to globalization and trade liberalization, people have more choices available and all countries can bring out their own comparative advantages. Although people may confront all sorts of obstacles during the process, their wisdom and ability can help bring them useful solutions. What we need to do now is to cement our confidence.

李克强还表示，他希望中澳两国不断开辟新的合作领域，向世界证明自由贸易的益处。

同时，我们应该开辟新的领域，我们应该让中澳贸易走向繁荣的时代，就是要用中澳自由贸易的繁荣向我们的地区、向世界表明，自由贸易是会给人类带来福祉的。

At the same time we're exploring new areas. We want to take our trade to greater prosperity, and through this prosperity brought by our FTA we want to show to our region and the world that free trade will deliver benefits to all human beings.

所以“beef”是咋回事？原来，李克强在下榻酒店看到《澳大利亚人报》上的一篇报道。

The Australian has reported, perhaps in a humorous tone, that Premier Li Keqiang visits Australia with an eye on the beef market.

于是，李克强在即席讲话中主动提到了这个话题。

Taking a more serious tone, Premier Li stressed beef and chicken are not the only thing he was looking for.

这段风趣的讲话也引起了媒体的注意。例如，新华英文的一篇专稿就选用 “beef” 来做标题：

beef up: make strong or stronger；加强，补充，提高，改进。

李克强还进一步指出，问题不在于全球化和自由贸易本身，关键在于如何应对。

当前世界上贸易保护主义抬头，逆全球化声音上升。不可否认，经济全球化给某些地区、某些国家和人民带来了一些不适应的地方，但这不是全球化本身的问题，不是自由贸易的问题，而是如何应对的问题。

In the world, protectionism is rising and there are more voices against economic globalization. We cannot deny that in the process of globalization, indeed, for some parts of the world, for some people, for some countries, there are some problems. But this is not the issue of globalization per se, it is not an issue of free trade, but it is all about how to respond to it.

李克强坦言，目前中国农产品总体上供大于求，但依然愿意进口更多澳大利亚的优质产品，让中国消费者有更多选择。

……进口更多澳大利亚的优质产品，让中国的消费者有更多选择，倒逼中国企业加强竞争意识，提高产品品质。世界各国都应该这么做，这样就可以充分发挥各自比较优势，在公平竞争与合作中实现双赢共赢。

We will continue to import more Australian products. So that Chinese consumers will have more options. And it will encourage Chinese businesses to work more on their quality. That is the right thing and all countries need to do this, because that will draw out competitiveness of all countries in a constructive competition. And everybody will win from this process.

在谈到中澳友谊时，李克强意味深长地用“飞机穿越云层”来作比。

昨天，我和我的夫人乘飞机来澳大利亚，飞机穿过云层的时候，两边都有闪电，但我们一直在前进。

Yesterday when my wife and I were flying to Australia, we saw lightening on both sides of the plane when it flew through the clouds. Yet, we kept going forward.

"Advance" is a key word in both the Chinese and Australian national anthems. I am fully confident that China and Australia will continue to move forward in our own way while working with each other, and jointly help to counter global instability with the stability that is created through our steady development and co-operation.
