A memorial hall dedicated to the late American Chinese author Iris Chang has opened in Huai'an city of east China's Jiangsu Province.

Iris Chang, also known as Zhang Chunru, was born on March 28, 1968 in a Chinese immigrants' family in Princeton of New Jersey, the United States.

Her parents recalled that Iris learned to read at age 4. At 10, she won the first place in a young- author competition, which led to her dream of becoming a writer.

Chang worked briefly as a reporter for The Associated Press and the Chicago Tribune.

She is famous for her best-selling account of the Nanjing Massacre, The Rape of Nanking -- The Forgotten Holocaust of World War II.

In 2004, Chang committed suicide in California at the age of 36.

For more on the memorial hall and Chang's book, our host Jingnan earlier spoke with Wang Zhengxu, Professor of contemporary Chinese studies at Fudan University.

Iris Chang published The Rape of Nanking in 1997 after two years' research and interviews on the Chinese mainland.

Her book revealed the crimes committed by the Japanese military in Nanjing during World War II with ample documents and data.

It reaped international fame as one of the first books in English on the atrocities Japanese military inflicted upon Chinese people in 1937, a history not so well-known to the western audience.

Many Americans and Europeans read the book and knew the details of the Nanjing Massacre for the first time.

Ted Leonsis is one of those readers. After reading Chang's book, Leonsis decided to shoot a documentary film on the Nanking Massacre, a tragedy he had never heard of before.

He later invited the Academy Award-winning writer/director team of Bill Guttentag and Dan Sturman to co-direct the project.

The film hit screens in 2007, the 70th anniversary of the atrocity.

Iris Chang was considered a key member in retrieving Diaries of John Rabe, which provides crucial records of the Nanjing Massacre.

What really bothers me was that powerful forces out there in Japan wanted the story to go away. I just felt it was insulting to the victims. I think individuals have to fight to prevent these acts of genocide from happening and then being forgotten.

她的心愿是不能让这段历史消失,所以她写了这本书;

Always Pleasant Amenity (APA), a large Japanese hotel chain providing books that deny the Nanjing Massacre as well as forced prostitution in China and on the Korean Peninsula by the Japanese military during World War II has met strong protests from netizens in China.

The writer of the book, Toshio Motoya, is CEO of the APA Group and deputy director of a support group for Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
