China FM urges North Korea to respond to U.S. guarantees

China has urged North Korea to respond to U.S guarantees to not seek any political change in the North, and called for acceptance of the "double suspension" proposal made by China for solving the Korean Peninsula issue.

During the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting held in the Philippine capital city of Manila, Foreign Minister Wang Yi said China's stand is to realize the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsul and to safeguard peace and stability.

His US counterpart made four guarantees on the issue of North Korea.

On August 1st, Rex Tillerson said the US is not seeking regime change in North Korean, nor does it seek an accelerated reunification of the peninsula.

Also, he said the US was not seeking an excuse to send its military north of the 38th parallel, the dividing line between North and South Korea.

The Minister said China fully appreciates Tillerson's remarks and regards them as a positive signal.

He also proposed a blueprint for cooperation in six major aspects, including food safety, poverty reduction, economy, production, and people-to-people exchanges.

Top political advisor presents gifts to Inner Mongolia

Chinese political advisor Yu Zhengsheng has presented gifts to Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region to celebrate its 70th anniversary.

He presented a plaque with an inscription by Chinese President Xi Jinping.

It reads "building beautiful Inner Mongolia, achieving the great Chinese dream" in both Chinese and Mongolian.

The chairman of the National Committee of the CPPCC is in Inner Mongolia by leading a 63-person delegation from the central authorities.

He lauded the progress in areas including economic transformation, ethnic unity and poverty reduction when visiting an exhibition marking the region's achievements made over the past 70 years.

He also met with retired officials and people of various ethnic groups and from all walks of life, and extended greetings to them on behalf of the central delegation.

Kenyatta urges calm on eve of presidential vote

Kenya's President Uhuru Kenyatta has appealed for calm ahead of Tuesday's tightly contested general election.

The Kenyan president, who is seeking a second and final term in office, urged the 19 million registered voters to vote in peace.

The vote pits Kenyatta against main opposition leader Raila Odinga.

Odinga alleged voting irregularities after losing to Kenyatta in the 2013 election and took his case to the Supreme Court.

Odinga was also a candidate in the 2007 election, which was followed by deadly violence fuelled by ethnic rivalries.

Mexico hopes NAFTA renegotiations would be completed by early 2018

Mexican officials say they hope the renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement will be wrapped up by early next year.

The country's economy minister has made the statement, but added that they will not "give up substance for speed."

The official says they will set clear objectives and be very transparent during the renegotiation process to ensure that the market has a full understanding of the results.

The minister says Mexico has three main concerns to bring to the table – the expansion of trade, conflict resolution, and safeguarding industry interests.

The first round of NAFTA renegotiations is set for August 16-20 in Washington.

NAFTA entered into force in 1994, but will be renegotiated at the demand of U.S. President Donald Trump, who feels it has been unfair to his country.

Since 1994, Mexico's trade with the United States and Canada has grown by around 700 percent.

NYC mayor proposes millionaire's tax to fund subway repairs

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio is proposing to tax the city's wealthiest one percent to fund repairs and improvements of New York's subway system.

In introducing his proposals, de Blasio has called it a long term plan that would have a minimal impact on the wealthy.

The tax would increase the top income tax rate from about 3.9 percent to 4.4 percent for married couples who make more than 1 million US dollars, and individuals making more than half a million.

It will affect about 32-thousand of New York City taxpayers, or just less than one percent of the total.

It aims to generate nearly 800 million US dollars annually, with the bulk of the money going toward capital upgrades to subways and buses.

The proposal comes as De Blasio and New York State Govenor Andrew Cuomo have disagreed over responsibility for paying for repairs on New York's subways.

Cuomo has offered to split the cost with the city to fund a recently-unveiled emergency plan to stabilize the decades-old system, but the deal has been declined by De Blasio, whose new tax proposal must now be approved by state-lawkers.
