Trump directs trade representative to examine China

U.S. President Donald Trump has directed his U.S. trade representative to determine whether an investigation should be launched into alleged intellectual property right thefts against US companies operating in China.

The executive action comes despite the potential harm it might do to China-U.S. trade ties.

US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer has been asked to determine whether Chinese policies hurt American investors or companies -- with retaliatory measures a possible outcome.

Xi congratulates Kenyatta on re-election as Kenyan president

Chinese President Xi Jinping has sent a congratulatory message to Uhuru Kenyatta on his re-election as Kenyan president.

In his message, Xi Jinping says he highly values the development of the China-Kenya relationship.

Pakistani president meets Chinese vice premier

Pakistani President Mamnoon Hussain has met with visiting Chinese Vice Premier Wang Yang as part of his time in Pakistan.

Hussain has thanked the Chinese government for sending a delegation to attend the ceremonies marking the 70th anniversary of Pakistan's independence.

He notes that Pakistan's friendship with China forms the foundation of Pakistan's foreign policy.

For his part, Wang Yang says the relationship between China and Pakistan has become a model for country-to-country relations since they forged diplomatic ties 66 years ago.

The Chinese vice premier also says the Chinese side would like to continue forging stronger ties with Pakistan in areas including counter-terrorism, security, and people-to-people exchanges.

China to fully ban coal imports from North Korea

Chinese authorities have announced the full implementation of the latest UN Security Council resolutions on North Korea are taking effect as of this Tuesday.

Under the new restrictions, any imports of coal, lead, iron, iron ore and aquatic products will be turned back.

Products that had already arrived from North Korea before today will still be allowed in.

North Korea has been hit with a new round of UN sanctions for ignoring previous resolutions connected to its intercontinental ballistic missile tests.

The new sanctions are expected to reduce North Korea's export capacity by around one-third.

China halts building of coal power plants

Chinese authorities have announced a ban on the construction of new coal-fired power plants.

A total of 150 million kilowatts of new coal power generation capacity will see construction halted or postponed until at least 2020.

The government also intends to eliminate more than 20 million kilowatts of outdated capacity, as well as upgrade facilities producing nearly 1 billion kilowatts of capacity to produce fewer emissions.

The government plans to keep the country's total coal power capacity below 1.1 billion kilowatts by 2020.

One dead as car ploughs into Paris pizzeria

Police say a 13-year-old girl has been killed and her younger brother is barely clinging to life after a driver steered his car into a pizzeria east of Paris.

Local authorities say the younger brother is among the 12 people injured in the Monday night attack.

The official said the attacker was driving a BMW that appears to have directly targeted patrons at the pizzeria in the small town of Sept-Sorts, which is about 60 kilometres east of Paris.

France's Interior Ministry has described the man as apparently suicidal, and says they don't believe his actions are linked to terrorism.

Burkina attack leaves victims from around the world

18 people, including at least 8 foreigners, have been shot dead in a Turkish restaurant in Burkina Faso.

So far there has been no claim of responsibility for Sunday night's attack at the Aziz Istanbul restaurant, which is often packed with foreign nationals who go there to watch football.

The two attackers were later killed by security forces in a counter-assault.

Five members of the security forces are among the 22 people wounded in the attack.

This is the latest attack on foreigner hot-spots in Burkina Faso's capital, Ouagoudougou.

London's famous Big Ben to fall silent for repairs

Big Ben - the huge clock on Britain's Parliament - will fall silent next week as a four-year restoration project gets underway.

The bongs of the iconic bell will be stopped after chiming at noon on August 21st.

The move is meant to protect workers during the 40-million-US dollar repair project on the Queen Elizabeth Tower, which houses Big Ben and its clock.

It isn't due to resume its regular service until 2021.

Big Ben has been stopped several times since it first sounded in 1859.

However, the current restoration project will mark its longest period of silence.

China's health service industry to reach 16 trillion yuan by 2030

A new report released by Chinese authorities is anticipating this country's health services market will become a 16-trillion yuan industry by 2030.

The National Health and Family Planning Commission says this expectation is being bolstered by increases in health-related industries in such areas as the elderly care, tourism, Internet, fitness and food.

The report says health officials plan to maintain the "Healthy China 2030" program launched last year through improving health services, the medical industry, as well as food and drug safety.

Data shows the number of private hospitals hit close to 17-thousand in China as of May this year, accounting for over half of the total number of hospitals.

Private hospitals recorded 180-million medical visits in the first five months of this year.

This is an increase of 13-percent year on year.
