China to make sure 2022 Winter Olympic Games great success: President Xi

Ahead of the opening of China's national games, President Xi Jinping held talks with International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach in Tianjin.

Both sides vowed to coordinate with each other to hold a great winter Olympiad in China in 2022.

Xi Jinping reaffirmed China's commitment to host "a fantastic, extraordinary and excellent" event.

He also thanked the IOC for its contribution to the development of the Chinese Olympic Movement and to the wider cause of sport.

UN chief arrives in Israel, begins first visit since taking office to region

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has landed in Israel for a three-day visit to the country and to the Palestinian National Authority.

The visit, Guterres' first to the region since taking office in January, includes meetings in Jerusalem with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Reuven Rivlin.

He will also travel to Ramallah, where he will meet with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

His itinerary includes a visit to the besieged Gaza Strip, where the UN runs major aid programs to prevent a spiraling humanitarian crisis.

Storm batters southern China

Pakhar, the 14th typhoon of the year, has landed in Guangdong Province, days after Typhoon Hato made landfall in the same region.

Pakhar landed in the coastal areas of the city of Taishan Sunday morning, and weakened into a severe tropical storm about one hour later.

The provincial flood control headquarters says the cities of Shenzhen, Huizhou, Shanwei, Zhuhai, Zhongshan and Jiangmen have seen rainstorms.

Macao has also been struck by Hato and Pakhar. Upon Macao's request, Guangdong has sent 20 fire tankers and a batch of disaster relief materials, such as disinfecting devices, water pumps, generators and gloves.

China's industrial profits up 21.2 percent in first 7 months

Official data shows China's major industrial firms posted steady profit growth in the first seven months of the year.

It is seen as further evidence of firming strength in the economy.

But the figure is much faster than the 8.5-percent increase in 2016.

In July alone, profits of major industrial firms rose 16.5 percent year on year, slower than the 19.1-percent rate in June.

China, Russia freight train delivers success, 17,000 tonnes of cargo

More than 17,000 tonnes of products have been delivered from southern China to Russia via a freight train route that was inaugurated a year ago.

The route links Guangzhou and Vorsino, a city southwest of Moscow.

Over the past year, 43 trains have run the route, delivering goods worth 236 million U.S. dollars.

It takes the train 15 to 18 days to reach Vorsino, about 10 days less than the sea-rail transport service, and 25 days less than a ship.

The costs are just one-third of air transportation.

So far, more than 20 Chinese cities now run trains to central Asia and Europe.

Iran rejects inspection of military sites under nuclear deal

A senior military adviser to Iran's supreme leader has rejected possibilities of inspecting Iranian military sites under the pretext of the international nuclear deal.

The major general says the nuclear agreement signed between Iran and six major powers two years ago allows no inspection of Iran's military sites.

He slammed recent comments made by the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, in her visit to the International Atomic Energy Agency headquarters in Vienna, as an attempt by Washington to undermine the nuclear agreement.

Meanwhile, the Iranian Foreign Ministry has also emphasized the IAEA inspections in Iran would be carried out only within the framework of the country's policies.

Colombia's FARC rebels debut political party

Colombia's FARC rebel group is introducing its political party at a conference that began on Sunday, a major step in its transition into a civilian organization after more than 50 years of war.

FARC leader Rodrigo Londono says there are various challenges and difficulties ahead.

Under its 2016 peace deal with the government to end a war that has killed more than 220-thousand people, the majority of fighters in the group formally known as the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia were granted amnesty and allowed to participate in politics.

The peace accord awards FARC's party ten automatic seats in Congress through 2026.

The party will initially be called the Revolutionary Alternative Force of Colombia, preserving the FARC initials in Spanish.

Hurricane Harvey weakens after battering Texas coast

The most powerful hurricane to hit the U.S. state of Texas in more than 50 years has moved slowly inland, dumping torrential rain expected to cause catastrophic flooding after battering the coast with winds of nearly 210 km per hour.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott warned residents to prepare for record flooding in multiple regions of the state.

Texas utility companies said nearly a quarter of a million customers lost power. Locals were still sheltering from the storm early on Saturday, making it difficult to gauge the full extent of the damage.
