President Xi to chair BRICS Xiamen summit on Sept. 3-5


It has been announced that Chinese President Xi Jinping will chair the upcoming BRICS summit in early September.


The summit will be held in Xiamen, Fujian Province from Sept. 3 to 5.

China's Foreign Ministry says that President Xi Jinping will also chair the Dialogue of Emerging Markets and Developing Countries on cooperation for common development.


The Chinese leader will also attend some other events, such as the opening ceremony of the BRICS business forum.


BRICS -- Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa -- is recognized as an important force in global governance. China holds the BRICS presidency this year.



Xi stresses commitment to deepening reform


President Xi Jinping says China will unswervingly deepen reforms with greater commitment and courage.


He made the remarks at the 38th meeting of the Central Leading Group for Deepening Overall Reform, which he heads.


The group called for efforts to build development priority zones, as part of the economic development and ecological protection strategy.


A statement says the zones should play a basic role in land development and be carried out with precision.


It also calls for a long-term plan for differentiated but coordinated development among zones of different functions.



Premier stresses collaboration, targeted works in poverty reduction


Chinese Premier Li Keqiang has asked for an improved poverty reduction campaign through regional collaboration.


In a written message to a meeting on east-west collaboration for poverty reduction, the premier says China's poverty relief campaign is going through a critical stage and government agencies should keep up the fight for progress.


He says the government has increased help for developed and underdeveloped regions to cooperate by providing support in funding, personnel, technology and industrial development.


The premier also demanded more efforts to bring growth to poor regions.



China to continue patrolling, defending Doklam area: FM spokesperson


Chinese authorities say border troops are continuing their patrols of the Doklam area in southern Tibet.

This comes amid confirmation that India has withdrawn its personnel and equipment from the area after a military stand-off lasting more than two months.


A statement from the Chinese foreign ministry says Doklam, lying along the border near at the Indian state of Sikkim to the west and the Kingdom of Bhutan to the south, has been part of Chinese territory for decades.


The statement says China is constructing roads in the area to meet the needs of soldiers and civilians, and improve living conditions in the area.


It adds that China will complete construction of the road at a later date.



Death toll rises to 17 in SW China landslide


The landslide in Nayong County, Guizhou on Monday has now claimed 17 lives.


Another 18 people are still missing.


The slide saw more than 600-thousand cubic meters of rock and mud hit a local village.


More than two thousand people, including firefighters and medical staff, have joined the rescue effort.



Cargo flight links northwest China with Germany


A new cargo flight service has been launched, linking the city of Xi'an with Germany.


The flight can carry around 100 tonnes of products.


The first flight took off Monday from Xi'an for Frankfurt.


The route is run by China-based Suparna Airlines, and is scheduled to fly once a week.


Xi'an already has cargo flight services which connect with Amsterdam, as well as several freight train links with Warsaw, Hamburg, and Moscow.



Rwanda pledges more support to UN peacekeeping


The Rwandan government has pledged continued support to the United Nations peacekeeping operations around the World.


Rwanda's defense minister has made the commitment while speaking at the UN peace operations preparatory meeting in the capital city of Kigali.


More than 100 delegates from UN peacekeeping troops and finance contributing countries participate in the two-day meeting to discuss modalities to improve peacekeeping.


Delegates are discussing issues like protecting those at risk and early warning and rapid deployment as selected themes and so on.



Pentagon braces for more Harvey requests for help


U.S. Air Force Major General James Witham says that the Pentagon is bracing for more requests to provide assistance in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Harvey.

Heavy rains bring traffic to standstill in Mumbai


Normal life came to a standstill in Mumbai, one of India's biggest cities, as road, rail, and air services were badly affected by heavy rains on Tuesday.


Traffic was disrupted and vehicles were seen driving through flooded roads in low-lying areas.


The Indian Meteorological Department has warned of "extremely heavy falls" for the following two days over the western coast of Ma-ha-rash-tra state, including Mumbai, and parts of Gujarat and Goa.



Apple in cooperation with Wechat in China


Apple users in China are now allowed to use Wechat Pay as a payment method for the App Store or Apple Music products.


In an official statement, Apple says its users can now purchase apps and subscribe to online music by bundling their App Store and WeChat payment accounts.


In China, around 963 million people use WeChat, a popular instant messaging and picture sharing tool.


The WeChat payment tie-up is expected to allow Apple to boost revenue from services, which may help the company to offset sales declines of iPhones and iPads in recent quarters in China.


Apple has accepted Alipay since October last year.


Apple has increased investment in China by setting up new research hubs, data centers and more Apple Stores.
