President Xi tells Modi healthy, stable China-India ties needed

Chinese President Xi Jinping says a healthy and stable relationship between China and India is in the fundamental interests of the two peoples.

Meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Xiamen, the president said China is willing to work with India to push bilateral ties along the right track.

He said the two sides should improve political trust and increase cooperation on the basis of the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence.

The principles were endorsed by China and India in the 1950s, and have been widely accepted as norms for relations between the two countries.

The two leaders' meeting follows the recent end to a 2-month military stand-off in the Dong Lang area, which is Chinese territory.

Top graft-buster stresses strict inspection at grassroots level

The Chief of the discipline watchdog of the Communist Party of China has stressed the need for enhanced supervision at the grassroots level.

Wang Qishan, head of the CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, made the remarks during an inspection tour in Hunan Province.

He says the problems discovered during the inspections such as the weakening of Party leadership, deficiency in Party building and inadequate work in strict Party governance have been tackled.

He said the biggest challenge for the CPC is still a lack of effective supervision of power, and he has urged combining intra-Party supervision with supervision by the masses at the grassroots level.

Wang Qishan has also called for further crackdowns on corruption in poverty relief so as to ensure the people get more benefits.

Over 4,000 people held accountable for environmental problems

The Ministry of Environmental Protection says over 4-thousand people have been held accountable for poor environmental protection in China after the latest round of inspection.

Earlier this week, eight inspection teams reported problems they found during the fourth round of inspections, after visiting the provinces of Jilin, Zhejiang, Shandong, Hainan, Sichuan and Qinghai, as well as Tibet and Xinjiang autonomous regions.

According to the ministry, more than 18-thousand cases were highlighted by the inspection teams, over 280 people were detained and 280 million yuan or about 43 million U.S. dollars in fines were issued.

UN chief concerned over situation in Myanmar's Rakhine

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed deep concern over the violence of Myanmar's security forces following attacks on them by Rohingyas.

Guterres has called for an immediate action plan to address the root causes of the crisis.

He says it will be crucial to give the Rohingyas in Rakhine State a legal status that will allow them to have a normal life, including freedom of movement and access to labor markets, education and health services.

The Myanmar government recognizes the Rohingyas as illegal immigrants from neighboring Bangladesh.

Trump's tax plan not to boost economy: former U.S. Treasury Secretary

Former U.S. Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers says the Trump administration's tax reform plan will do very little for economic growth.

Summers says that this is an effort to cut taxes, principally to cut taxes on business in ways that will benefit a small part of the population.

U.S. president Donald Trump pushed Congress last week to pass a comprehensive measure to overhaul the tax code.

The White House has said it will release a final version of the President's tax plan this month.

It is not clear whether Congress has enough time to debate and pass the tax reform legislation by the end of this year, as lawmakers also have to pass legislation to fund the federal government and raise the debt ceiling in the coming months.

Russian frigate strikes IS terrorists in Syria with cruise missiles

A Russian naval vessel deployed in the Mediterranean has carried out a cruise missile strike attack on Islamic State targets near the Syrian city of Deir al-Zour.

The Russian Defense Ministry says the strike was directed at a fortified area being held by a group of terrorists originally from Russia and other former Soviet-era countries.

Moscow says the strike destroyed various command posts, a communication center, and warehouses with weapons and ammunition.

It followed the Syrian government breaking the Islamic State's siege of Deir al-Zour.

China beats Qatar, loses World Cup ticket

China's faint hope of qualifying for next year's World Cup finals in Russia has come to an end, despite securing a 2-1 victory against Qatar in Group A.

China needed a win over Qatar and two other opponents - Syria and Uzbekistan - to lose in order to clinch a play-off spot for a World Cup berth.

However, Syria played to a 2-2 draw in Iran and Uzbekistan finished with a goalless draw with South Korea on Tuesday.
