UN Security Council passes new sanctions on North Korea, China voices support

The UN Security Council has unanimously adopted a resolution to impose new sanctions on North Korea over its nuclear test on Sept. 3, which violated previous Security Council resolutions.

Monday's resolution, the third Security Council action concerning the Asian country in five weeks, curtails North Korea's oil supply by almost 30 percent, bans all its textile exports, a sector worth worth 800 million U.S. dollars, and stops remittances for North Korean laborers from abroad.

With the new measures, 90 percent of the North's exports are now banned.

Following the passing of Monday's resolution, China's Foreign Ministry said the country supported the UN Security Council in taking necessary measures regarding North Korea's nuclear test.

Bolivia's state electricity company has signed a contract with Chinese firm Sinohydro to build the Ivirizu hydroelectric dam, investing 172 million US dollars for the project.

Construction will involve the building of tunnels and access paths to the dam, as well as the installation of machinery.

In his speech at the signing ceremony, Bolivian President Evo Morales pointed out Ivirizu would help Bolivia to become an energy center in South America and encouraged Sinohydro to meet the deadlines it has set.

The Ivirizu hydroelectric dam will be built over four years and is expected to have a full capacity of nearly 280 megawatts.

Amid ongoing diplomatic tensions between the US and Russia, senior officials of the two countries will reportedly begin talks to improve relations, doing so in the Finnish capital, Helsinki.

Qatari FM says Doha ready to talk to solve Gulf crisis

Qatar's Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani says his country is ready to engage in talks to resolve a diplomatic crisis, if dialogue is based on principles which are not violating international law and respect the sovereignty of each country.

Addressing the UN Human Rights Council session in Geneva, the official said that Qatar has faced many challenges due to the "imposition" of the economic blockade by Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and Bahrain.

He said the blockade has negatively impacted trade and investment and on the rights of the people in the country in such matters as freedom of movement.

The foreign minister said Qatar reaffirms its position in rejecting and condemning terrorism in all its forms, whatever the cause and motives are. Qatar is an active member in the coalition to counter terrorism.

The blockading countries' 13 demands include Qatar ending what they allege is support for Islamist extremist groups, the closure of a Turkish military base in the country, downgrading diplomatic ties with Iran and the closure of the Doha-based Al Jazeera television station.
