Merkel to continue with fourth term as German Chancellor, far-right party enters parliament


German Chancellor Angela Merkel is expected to take on her fourth term in office after her Christian Democratic Union party defended its role in parliament in the latest German elections.


Preliminary exit polls suggest the CDU received 32.5 percent of the vote in Sunday's election.


The Union's main rival, the center-left Social Democratic Party, or SPD, led by former European Parliament president Martin Schulz, also suffered a big setback and took just 20 percent of the vote.


Schulz has already conceded defeat.


In another development, the far right Alternative for Germany party crossed the five-percent-vote threshold on Sunday, and came into the new parliament for the first time with about 13.5 percent support, becoming the third strongest party in parliament.


Trump expands travel restrictions on North Korea, Venezuela, Chad


U.S. President Donald Trump has expanded travel restrictions to North Korea, Venezuela, Chad and some other countries.


The move came as Trump's earlier ban was set to expire.


The previous ban targeted travelers from six Muslim-majority nations.


11 killed in east China house fire


At least 11 people have been killed in a house fire in eastern China.


Local government officials in Zhejiang province say two homes were engulfed in flames on Monday night.

The cause of the fire remains unknown at this time.


China, Vietnam pledge to maintain border stability


Military delegations from China and Vietnam have wrapped up the fourth high-level border meeting between the two sides.


During the two-day meeting, senior military officials of the two countries together viewed joint anti-terrorism drills and patrols by border forces.


At the meeting, both parties agreed to control differences between the two, and work together to maintain stability in the border area.


Chinese peacekeepers return home from South Sudan


The first batch of the 15th Chinese peacekeeping force to South Sudan has returned home.


The Chinese soldiers have completed a one-year peacekeeping mission.


All 331 Chinese peacekeepers have been awarded the UN Peace Medal of Honor to commend their great contributions to the UN and the locals.


The second and the third batches of Chinese peacekeepers are scheduled to return home on Monday and Thursday respectively.


Chinese overseas police liaisons help to arrest 1,000 crimnal suspects


The Chinese Ministry of Public Security says police liaison officers, stationed in Chinese embassies and consulates worldwide, helped to return more than one-thousand criminal suspects back to China by the end of 2016.


The arrests and repatriation of the suspects were part of a program for China to improve law enforcement cooperation with other countries.


The ministry says China has sent 64 police liaison officers to 31 foreign countries.


They have helped handle nearly 45-hundred cross-border cases.


The ministry also says the liaison officers have played a key role in safeguarding lives and property of overseas Chinese.


Russian General killed in IS shelling in Syria: defense ministry


A Russian lieutenant general was killed in a shelling launched by Islamic State terrorists near the city of Deir al-Zour in northeastern Syria.


Valery Asapovb was a member of the group of Russian military advisers working with Syrian commanders during the operation aimed at the liberation of Deir al-Zour.


He will receive a state award posthumously.


On Thursday, the Russian defense ministry said that the Syrian government troops continued their offensive operations to destroy the last stronghold of the IS terrorist group in the vicinity of Deir al-Zour, after breaking a three-year blockade of the city earlier this month.


The ministry said about 85 percent of the city is free from the IS and the whole city could be liberated within a week.


China's lottery sales up 13.1 percent in August


Stats show that China's lottery sales last month rose 13.1 percent year on year to over 35 billion yuan, or around 5.3 billion U.S. dollars.


Sales of welfare lottery tickets in August increased 10 percent year on year, while sports lottery sales went up 16.4 percent.


26 provinces and regions saw growth in lottery sales last month, mostly driven by strong sales in east, central and south China.


Lottery sales in the first 8 months of the year went up 6.3 percent to more than 270 billion yuan.


Dongfeng, Nissan to recall over 1600 Infiniti vehicles


Chinese automaker Dongfeng Motor and its partner Nissan China Investment are set to recall over 1600 vehicles over defects in the air bag restraint systems.


Those vehicles to be recalled include China-made Infiniti Q50L, QX50 and Q50 models.


The flawed side airbags in the cars could be less effective than qualified products, posing potential safety threat to drivers and passengers.


The recall will start on Thursday, with the companies vowing to replace faulty parts for free.


Mixed-sex giant panda twins celebrate first birthday in Shanghai


The Shanghai Wildlife Park launched previews of a pair of mixed-sex giant panda twins, two weeks ahead of their first birthday.


The elder brother of the giant pandas was named Yue Yue while his little sister was given the name Ban Ban after five million people submitted over five thousand proposals in a campaign to name the cubs.


Thirty pairs of mixed-sex twins and their parents, at the invitation of the zoo, started the meet-ups at the panda house to send their greetings to the pandas.


The pandas are the first pair of mixed-sex twins born in east China and they have been in good health since they were born on October 4 last year.
