Chinese President to attend APEC summit, visit Vietnam, Laos


Chinese President Xi Jinping will attend the APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting next week and visit Vietnam and Laos.

The 25th APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting will be held in Da Nang, Vietnam, on Nov. 10-11.


President Xi will then pay state visits to Vietnam and Laos from Nov. 12 to 14.


Established in 1989, APEC is a forum for 21 Pacific Rim economies which account for more than half of the world's GDP.



China promotes military anti-graft chief to general


The Central Military Commission (CMC) on Thursday promoted Zhang Shengmin, secretary of its discipline inspection commission, to the rank of general, the highest rank for officers on active service in China.


At the promotion ceremony, CMC Chairman Xi Jinping presented Zhang with a certificate of command, shook hands with him and extended his congratulations.


Zhang is also a member of the CMC.



3,317 fugitives abroad captured in China's "Fox Hunt"


Chinese police caught over 3,300 fugitives from over 120 countries and regions in the past five years.


The Fox Hunt campaign targets suspects who have fled overseas to avoid answering for their alleged economic crimes.


The Ministry of Public Security says inter-agency cooperation and the use of new technology boosted the efficiency in tracking those who have changed identities or gone through cosmetic surgery.


During the past five years, Greece, Bulgaria, Italy and other countries or regions have extradited 16 suspects requested by Chinese authorities, in addition to 17 suspects who voluntarily returned to China.



Yunnan province seizes over 100,000 drug dealers since 2013


Police in Yunnan Province, which borders the notorious opium-producing Golden Triangle, have caught over 100,000 drug dealers and seized over 100 tonnes of drugs during the past five years.


The provincial police department says the amount of heroin and meth seized in the province accounts for around 80 percent and 90 percent respectively of the total confiscated across the country.


As the country's frontline in the battle against drugs, Yunnan has stepped up anti-narcotics collaboration with Southeast Asian countries.



Trump nominates Jerome Powell to head U.S. Federal Reserve


US President Donald Trump has tapped Federal Reserve Governor Jerome Powell to become the next chair of the U.S. central bank.

The decision comes after a months-long process where Trump had considered five choices, including the current chair Janet Yellen.


The nomination is yet to be confirmed by the U.S. Senate.


Powell suggested his priorities will include achieving stable prices and maximum employment.


64-year-old Powell has served as a Fed governor since 2012.


He has supported Yellen's general direction in setting monetary policy.



U.S. considering relisting DPRK as state sponsor of terrorism: White House


The White House says the U.S. is considering relisting North Korea as a state sponsor of terrorism.


National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster said at a briefing that the decision will be part of the U.S. overall strategy on North Korea.


The remarks come as U.S. President Donald Trump is set to start his five-nation official trip to Asia.


McMaster says one of the major objectives of Trump's Asia trip is to strengthen international efforts to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula.



Spanish prosecutor requests arrest warrant for former Catalan leader


A Spanish state prosecutor has asked judge to issue a European arrest warrant for sacked Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont.


The request for the arrest warrant also included four more former Catalan ministers.


Also on Thursday, eight former members of Puigdemont's deposed government appeared in Spain's High Court in Madrid, to answer questions.


Puigdemont and the four others opted to remain in Brussels insisting they would not get a fair hearing in what they called a "political trial."


However, Spanish prosecutors are against Puigdemont being allowed to testify by video-conference.



Cote d'Ivoire inaugurates Chinese-built biggest hydropower dam


Cote d'Ivoire has inaugurated a Chinese-built hydroelectric power station, the largest of its kind in the West African country.


The 4.5-km-long hydropower dam, with an installed capacity of 275 megawatts (MW), is expected to increase hydro power in Cote d'Ivoire's energy mix and cement the country's status as a key power producer and supplier in West Africa.


The Soubre project, dormant for several decades due to lack of funding, was relaunched in February 2013 with funding from China.

Higgins stunned by teenager Yan Bingtao in quarterfinal at World Snooker International Championship


Chinese teenager Yan Bingtao surprisingly overwhelmed world number two John Higgins 6-2 at the 2017 World Snooker International Championship.

This is the second time Yan has reached a quarterfinal in his career, and it's his first semifinal in a ranking event.


The 17-year-old home favorite also eliminated the "Rocket" Ronnie O'Sullivan in the first round of the tournament.


Yan's next opponent will be Mark Allen, who survived an 11-frame clash in the quarterfinal.
