Xi holds welcome ceremony for Trump

Chinese President Xi Jinping has held a grand ceremony to welcome U.S. President Donald Trump.

The ceremony took place at the square outside the east gate of the Great Hall of the People.

Trump arrived in Beijing Wednesday afternoon for a three-day state visit.

After his arrival, the US president toured the Palace Museum, also known as the Forbidden City, in downtown Beijing.

The Forbidden City is the former residence of China's imperial families during the Ming and Qing dynasties.

Located in the center of Beijing, it is a national landmark and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

U.S. senator, ranchers hail multi-million-dollar beef deal with Chinese commerce giant

U.S. Senator Steve Daines and ranchers from the northwestern state of Montana have applauded a 300-million-U.S. dollar beef deal between Chinese commerce giant JD.com and the Montana Stockgrowers Association (MSGA).

According to the terms in the memorandum of agreement (MOA), JD intends to import Montana-sourced beef from member companies of MSGA and sell directly to Chinese consumers through its e-commerce platform. Bank of China will provide financial services to facilitate these imports and the settlement process.

JD signed the agreement with Errol Rice, executive vice president of MSGA, in Beijing on Wednesday, as U.S. President Donald Trump began his three-day state visit to China.

Daines said in a statement that the deal has the potential to substantially increase Montana opportunity and agricultural exports to China, the fastest growing overseas market for beef.

Syrian army liberates last IS stronghold in eastern Syria

The Syrian army and allied fighters have liberated the city of al-Bukamal, the last Islamic State (IS) stronghold in eastern Syria.

The victory comes hours after the army started storming the city, which was the last IS stronghold in that part of the country.

Al-Bukamal is important for IS due to its proximity to IS-held areas on the Iraqi side of the border, which have recently been stormed by the Iraqi army and allied troops.

The IS militants have now lost all of their strongholds in Syria, maintaining just a few pockets in northeastern Syria.

Last month, the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces captured the northern city of Raqqa, the de facto capital of IS.

This month, the Syrian army captured Deir al-Zour.
