China's first cross-ocean biofuel flight lands at Chicago airport

A Haiman Airlines Boeing 787 Dreamliner powered by biological fuel has landed at Chicago O'Hare International Airport after flying over 11,000 kilometers from Beijing.

The aviation fuel is produced from waste cooking oil processed by Chinese company Sinopec.

In his resignation letter read out by Speaker of Parliament Jacob Mudenda, Mugabe has said his decision to resign is voluntary to ensure a smooth, peaceful and non-violent transition of power.

The Speaker of Parliament says he will immediately put in place proper legal processes to install a new president no later than the end of Wednesday.

The resignation came two days after the ruling Zanu-PF party deposed Mugabe as leader, and also recalled him from government over a litany of charges.

The party had given Mugabe until mid-day on Monday to resign, but he ignored the deadline, prompting Zanu-PF legislators on Tuesday to start parliamentary impeachment proceedings against him.

However, as the impeachment proceedings got underway, Mugabe abruptly resigned, ending almost four decades of near total dominance of Zimbabwe's political landscape.

Iraq to declare final victory over Islamic State soon - Iraqi PM

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi has said the Islamic State had been defeated from a military perspective but he will only declare final victory after IS militants have been routed in the desert.

Iraqi forces on Friday captured the border town of Rawa, the last remaining town under Islamic State control, signaling the collapse of the group's "caliphate" proclaimed after it overran much of Iraq's north and west in 2014.

Military commanders say securing desert and border areas is what remains in the campaign against Islamic State.

Xinjiang offers 15 years of free education

Final preparations are being completed to allow Xinjiang to become China's first provincial-level region to offer 15 years of free education, from pre-school to high school.

Starting next month, tuition, textbook and accommodation fees will be waived for the over 850-thousand students at local high schools and secondary vocational schools.

Students from poorer families will also get extra subsidies.

Authorities in Xinjiang have already been providing free education in both the Chinese and Uygur languages for over a million preschoolers.

The national standard in China is currently 9 years of free compulsory education, stemming from a 1986 national law.
