Suspended head of Russian Olympic Committee calls IOC decision to ban country's team 'controversial'

The International Olympic Committee has announced that Russia is banned from the 2018 Winter Olympics over doping concerns.

The IOC decided to suspend the Russian Olympic Committee with immediate effect, but Russian athletes would still be able to compete at the Pyeongchang Games in uniforms bearing the name "Olympic Athlete from Russia" under the Olympic Flag, and the Olympic Anthem will be played in any ceremony.

A report from the World Anti-Doping Agency last year accused Russia of state-sponsored doping programs.

VOA, Radio Liberty declared "foreign agents" in Russia

The Russian Justice Ministry has listed Voice of America and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty as foreign agents.

The move comes amid an escalating tit-for-tat between Russia and the U.S. over government-funded media outlets.

Russia's State Duma, or the lower house of parliament, also plans to adopt a bill banning entry into the country for about nine media outlets.

Earlier, the U.S. Department of Justice forced Russia Today to register as a "foreign agent" on suspicion of interfering in the 2016 U.S. presidential election by spreading fake news.

Last week, RT America was stripped of its press credentials on Capitol Hill due to its "foreign agent" status.

Trump to announce whether move U.S. embassy in Israel to Jerusalem

US President Donald Trump is set to deliver remarks later today about his decision on whether to move the U.S. embassy in Israel to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv.

He has informed Arab leaders that he intends to make the major change in calls to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Jordan's King Abdullah, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and Saudi Arabia's King Salman.

Many of the leaders are warning that unilateral U.S. steps on Jerusalem could derail a fledgling U.S.-led peace effort and unleash turmoil in the region.

Trump pledged to move the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem during his election campaign, but last June he signed an extraordinary six-month order to keep it in Tel Aviv.

Nearly 50 injured in train collision in western Germany

Nearly 50 people were injured in a train collision in western German city of Meerbusch Tuesday evening.

The collision took place around 7:30 p.m. near the Meerbusch-Osterath railway station, where a regional passenger train crashed into the back of a freight train parking on the same track.

The local fire department said that rescuers have found 155 people on the train and three people were seriously injured.

Rescue operations are going slowly because overhead power lines have been torn down and are hanging dangerously.

It remains unclear why the cargo train parked on the track.
