Putin orders "significant" pullback of Russian troops from Syria


Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered a "significant" pullback of Russian troops from Syria, declaring their work largely done.

Putin has made the announcement as part of an unscheduled visit to Russia's military airbase in Syria.

This is the first time Putin has visited Syria as President.


It's also the first visit by a foreign head of state to Syria since the conflict first erupted in March of 2011.


Putin's visit comes just a few weeks after Syria President Bashar al-Assad met with Putin during an unannounced visit to Sochi.


NY mayor: Blast "an attempted terrorist attack"


A 27-year-old man is in custody after an attempted terrorist attack in the New York subway system.

Akayed Ullah is being treated for serious burns after the pipe bomb he allegedly attempted to detonate during Monday morning's rush-hour failed to detonate.


Three people are being treated for minor injuries.


Authorities say the suspect was inspired to carry out the attack by the Islamic State.


Officials don't believe he had any direct contact with the group.


Ullah arrived in the US from Bangladesh 7-years ago on a preferential visa program for people with relatives in the United States.


President Trump signs directive sending U.S. astronauts back to moon, eventually Mars


US President Donald Trump has signed his administration's first space policy directive, formally directing NASA to send astronauts back to the moon and eventually Mars.

Trump reestablished the National Space Council in June and designated Vice President Mike Pence as its chair.


The council was first created in 1989 by then President George H.W. Bush.


It was disbanded in 1993 under President Bill Clinton.


8th round of Astana talks on Syria slated for Dec. 21-22


It's been announced that the next round of the Russian-backed Syrian peace talks will be held on December 21st and 22nd in the Kazakh capital, Astana.


This latest round is expected to discuss the release of detainees, the transfer of bodies and the search for the missing.


The agenda also includes discussions surrounding the de-escalation zones in Syria, as well as demining.


Running in parallel with the UN-backed Geneva process, the Astana talks have been held since January, with Russia, Turkey and Iran as the mediators.


Poland's new PM Morawiecki sworn in


Mateusz Morawiecki has been officially sworn in as Poland's new Prime Minister.


As part of the ceremony, Polish President Andrejz Duda has praised Morawiecki's decision to keep the present government line-up unchanged, describing it as an amicable decision.


Morawiecki is replacing Beata Szydlo, who resigned from her post last week.


Szydlo will stay on in the cabinet as the deputy Prime Minister.


Morawiecki, a former banking executive, will retain his position as finance and development minister.


Morawiecki has been tapped to take over to help guide the ruling Law and Justice Party ahead of a series of upcoming elections at the local and national levels in the next several years.


Xi stresses nonstop efforts to fight undesirable work styles


Xi Jinping has issued a new call for an end to so-called "undesirable work styles" in both the party and the government.


He's also suggesting the party and the government need to be vigilant against new forms of misconduct.


Xi Jinping has suggested the new forms of misconduct are - in nature - old problems.


He says these include adhering to formalities for formalities' sake, as well as any trend toward bureaucratism, hedonism, and extravagance.


Top adviser meets Taiwan New Party


Top political advisor Yu Zhengsheng has met with a delegation from Taiwan's New Party.


As part of the meeting, Yu Zhengsheng has told the group that mainland authorities want to share the opportunities of development with Taiwan.


He also says the central authorities are going to do more to help people from Taiwan living and working in the mainland.


The commitment has been included in the recent national congress of the Communist Party of China.


The New Party delegation is on a week-long visit to the mainland at the invitation of the CPC Central Committee.


This is the first visit of a party delegation from Taiwan to the mainland following the CPC National Congress.


China publishes documents about Nanjing Massacre ahead of memorial day


Chinese authorities have put out a new series of documents connected to the Nanjing Massacre ahead of the National Memorial Day this Wednesday.

The documents include the court testimony from Japanese war criminals, diaries and records from the Japanese military.


Written documents of some of the Chinese victims, as well as records written by people from abroad are also included.


The documents have been published both on paper and in digital versions.


They've also been translated into both English and Japanese.


Alibaba will make car software, not cars


Alibaba's senior VP, Hu Xiaoming, has revealed that the company intends to focus on creating software for vehicles, rather than producing cars.


This has confirmed what industry analysts have been predicting, after Alibaba unveiled AliOS in September.


This is rebranded and upgraded version of its original YunOS operating system.


Alibaba signed an agreement with Ford last week.


It's expected the new AliOS system will be installed in new Ford and Lincoln marques in China.
