The UN General Assembly has adopted a resolution declaring the U.S. recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital as "null and void".

All states are also urged to refrain from the establishment of diplomatic missions in the city.

Both the United States and Israel are among the countries voting against the text, with the U.S. side reportedly threatening to cut aid for the countries voting in favor.

Nikki Haley, U.S. ambassador to the UN, adds that her country will move its Embassy in Israel to Jerusalem, and no vote in the UN will make any difference on that.

Earlier this week, the U.S. vetoed a draft resolution on the status of Jerusalem at the Security Council, while all 14 other members voted in favor.

The election was called after Rajoy sacked the Catalan regional government and dissolved the regional parliament in the wake of an independence declaration by separatist regional politicians.

Now, it remains to be seen if the pro-independence parties can agree to form a new government.
