Xi orders armed police to uphold CPC's absolute leadership 

 

Chinese President Xi Jinping has ordered the country's armed police to uphold the absolute leadership of the Communist Party of China.


Xi Jinping made the remarks at a Central Military Commission ceremony to confer a flag on the armed police force.


Xi Jinping is also general secretary of the CPC Central Committee and chair of the Central Military Commission.


China's armed police force is now under the command of the CPC Central Committee and the Central Military Commission as of this year.


The Armed Police Force used to be directed by the State Council, China's cabinet. 

 

LMC meeting wraps up, new plan laid out 


The 2nd Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Leaders' Meeting has wrapped up in the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh after issuing a joint declaration and an action plan for the coming five years.


Chinese premier Li Keqiang has proposed to enhance cooperation in such areas as the digital economy, environmental protection and youth exchanges.


Meanwhile, the attending leaders also discussed ways to deepen cooperation in combating non-traditional security issues, collaborate on larger sub-regional projects and explore the possibility of establishing an economic corridor in the region. 

 

IOC to decide on DPRK's participation in PyeongChang 2018 Winter Games 

 

The International Olympic Committee has said it will host a four-party meeting to decide on North Korea's participation in the PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games.


The meeting has been called for in a joint proposal from the two Koreas. It will be chaired by IOC President Thomas Bach.


The meeting will involve decisions such as the number and names of athletes and officials from North Korea.


The two Koreas made the decision on North Korea's participation in the Winter Olympics during talks between chief negotiators from the two sides. 


Trump says U.S. could "go back in" Paris Agreement 


U.S. President Donald Trump said Wednesday that Washington could "conceivably" re-enter the global Paris climate agreement, from which he announced the US withdrawal last year.


Trump insists that the Paris Agreement, which the international community signed in 2015 with the aim of combating climate change by limiting global temperature rise to well below two degrees Celsius, was "a bad deal" and "very unfair" to the United States.


Trump's decision in June last year to pull the United States out of the landmark global accord has sparked a wave of anger and dismay at home and also a chorus of disapproval abroad. 

 

Russia's Putin appoints heads of his election team 

 

Russia's incumbent president and independent candidate Vladimir Putin has named three co-chairs for his presidential campaign team.


The co-chairs and all other team members will work as unpaid volunteers.

Suspected oil spill found after vessel collision in East China Sea 


A small oil spill has been spotted near the site of a collision in the East China Sea.


The oil tanker that collided with a bulk freighter on Saturday was still burning as of Wednesday afternoon.


Earlier reports said the highly volatile condensate oil it carried would cause little pollution.


But some experts are warning of a threat to the maritime atmosphere as it may contain a relatively high level of sulfide.


However, the experts also suggested the accident will not affect coastal water at the moment, based on current conditions. 

 

China requires close monitoring on flu outbreak

Medical authorities across the country are required to reserve antiviral medicines, and allocate medical resources and equipment for timely treatment of severe cases.

China is in the grip of a particularly aggressive flu season.


It's reported the virus this time is exceedingly infectious and has spread quickly 

 

China investigates 23 former senior officials in 2017 

 

Chinese prosecution authorities have said 23 officials at the provincial level or above have been put under investigation.


According to prosecutors, 34 fugitives have either been captured or persuaded to turn themselves in since October 2014.


The 34 were among the 100 fugitives targeted as subjects of an Interpol red notice.


China has cooperated with a number of countries to hunt down fugitives suspected of involvement in corruption.


Many of the fugitives were former government officials or employees of state-owned enterprises.


Since 2017, 1,300 fugitives have returned to China, including over 340 Party members and state functionaries. 

 

China air force stages real combat training 


The Chinese military has confirmed the country's most advanced stealth jet fighters have joined in a real combat training missions.


The J-20 made its maiden flight in 2011 and was officially commissioned into military service in September last year.


Over the years, it has made several public appearances including the military parade in August marking the founding anniversary of the People's Liberation Army.


The ongoing exercise also involves the newly deployed Y-20 military transporters and the country's strategic bombers.
