China and Myanmar have pledged to keep close communication on the situation in northern Myanmar and maintain peace and stability in the border areas between the two countries.

The latest round of their diplomacy and defense consultations also saw an agreement for pushing forward the building of a bilateral economic corridor.

The meeting was held Wednesday in Myanmar's capital NAY PYI TAW.

Myanmar State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi and Commander-in-Chief of Myanmar's Defense Services Min Aung Hlaing also met with the Chinese delegation respectively.

The two sides agreed to hold the next round of talks in China.

Mainland authorities are blasting the passing of a bill by the US House of Representatives, saying it violates the one-China principle.

The State Council's Taiwan Affairs Office is responding to the Taiwan Travel Act passed by the US House.

The proposed bill would encourage mutual visits between U.S. and Taiwan officials at all levels.

Mainland authorities say the Taiwan Travel Act severely violates the one-China principle, as it would encourage official breaches of protocol which have been established since the US officially rejected recognition of Taiwan in favor of ties with the PRC in 1972.

HK student activists jailed for contempt of court

Hong Kong's High Court has ordered imprisonment and fines for 16 protesters in the illegal Occupy movement back in 2014.

The defendants include the student leader Joshua Wong Chi-fung who was sentenced to three months in jail for refusing to obey a court order to clear the occupied areas.

The others were sentenced to terms ranging from one month to four and a half months.

Some of them were also fined 10,000 or 15,000 Hong Kong dollars.

The 79-day illegal mass occupation led to a community outcry.

The 16 sentenced were found guilty of criminal contempt of court after they refused to leave the occupied area despite a court injunction sought by taxi drivers.

Smartphones get all-clear for take-off in China

China Eastern and Hainan airlines have announced they will allow passengers to use their smart phones in the air from today.

But the carriers also stated that the phones must be shifted to flight mode and the communication function must be turned off.

That means passengers will merely be able to take pictures or use in-flight Wi-Fi services on their devices.

Phones with no flight mode facility still have to be turned off throughout the flight.

The airlines also allow the use of laptops, iPads, e-books and other small-size portable electronic devices on flight.

The use of phones was previously banned on flights by Chinese carriers.

Flouting the rules can mean a fine of up to 50,000 yuan.

U.S. Navy to charge commanders of crashed warship with homicide

The commanders of two US Naval vessels involved in separate collisions that left 17 sailors dead face charges, including negligent homicide and dereliction of duty.

The USS John S. McCain collided with an oil tanker off the coast of Indonesia in August, killing 10 sailors, while the USS Fitzgerald smashed into a cargo ship in June off the coast of Japan, leaving seven dead.

The cases will be heard through the US military justice system, with a panel to decide whether the two commanders will be tried by martial court.

A report by the US Navy contends the incidents could have been preventable, yet turned out as a result of "multiple failures."
