Yang Jiechi meets Tillerson, China & U.S. to host 2nd round of security dialogue 


Chinese State Councilor Yang Jiechi has met with U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson in Washington.


Yang is on a two-day visit to the U.S. Thursday and Friday, at the invitation of Tillerson.


The two sides have agreed to hold the 2nd round of diplomatic and security dialogue in China in the first half of this year.


Yang has told Tillerson that the two countries can address trade issues through open markets, making a "bigger cake of cooperation."


Meanwhile, Tillerson has said the U.S. is committed to upholding the "One China" policy, and that the two sides can address their differences based on mutual respect, and expand cooperation. 

 

China, AU seek closer cooperation in various fields 


Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Chairperson of the African Union Commission Moussa Faki Mahamat have jointly hosted the Seventh China-AU strategic dialogue in Beijing, seeking closer cooperation in various fields.


Wang Yi says China is ready to work with African countries to make China-Africa relations a role model for cooperation among developing countries.


Faki says the AU and African countries attach great importance to their relations with China and appreciate China's longtime support.


Meantime, the Chairperson has also refuted recent reports which accused China of spying on the AU.


The French newspaper Le Monde has said China bugged the AU Conference Center it built and gifted to the AU in 2012, and had been downloading data from servers in the building. 

 

China's aid to Maldives attaches no political conditions: FM 


Foreign Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang has denied a report that China has attached political conditions to aiding the Maldives.


Geng made the remarks in response to an article written by former Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed.


Geng also said the aid has done no harm to the country's sovereignty and independence, let alone jeopardized the Indian Ocean area's security.


In his article published by the Indian Express on Wednesday, Nasheed criticized incumbent Maldivian president Abdulla Yameen, saying that in his endless quest to enrich himself, he has sold off the nation's sovereignty.


Nasheed also said that foreign powers, with China included, were engaged in a "land grab" of key infrastructure and even essential utilities in the country.


Geng said that China continues to cooperate with the Maldives on infrastructure construction and projects aimed to improve livelihoods on the basis of mutual respect and equal treatment. 

 

North Korea orchestra performs in Gangneung for South Korean audience 


A North Korean orchestra has put on a performance for hundreds of South Koreans,head of the opening of the PyeongChang Winter Olympics in South Korea.


The Samjiyon Band performed in the coastal city of Gangneung, which is co-hosting the Winter Games.


The art troupe played songs from both North and South Korea, as well as a medley of Western tunes, including one from Broadway musical 'Phantom of the Opera.'

U.S. stock market tumbles again, Dow plunges more than 1,000 points 


U.S. stocks ended sharply lower on Thursday, as the rise in yields continued to weigh on the market.


The Dow Jones plunged more than 1,000 points, or 4.15 percent.


The S&P 500 dropped just over 100 points, or 3.75 percent.


The Nasdaq tumbled nearly 275 points, or 3.9 percent.


Analysts said rising bonds yields dented investor sentiment.


The country's 10-year yield nearly surpassed a four-year high of 2.885 percent in the morning trading Thursday.


That level helped trigger a global sell-off in equity markets on Monday. 

 

Chinese wearable device maker Huami debuts on NYSE 


Chinese smart wearable device maker Huami rang the New York Stock Exchange opening bell Thursday, in celebration of its debut on the exchange.


This marks the first New York Stock Exchange IPO of a Chinese company this year.


Huami is trading under the ticker symbol of "HMI."


It priced its IPO of 10 million American Depositary Shares at 11 U.S. dollars.


Credit Suisse, Citigroup and China Renaissance are the joint book runners.


Shares of Huami rose 2.27 percent to close at $11.25 on Thursday.


The smart wearables market has grown rapidly in China.


Huami shipped 11.6 million units of smart wearable devices in the first nine months of 2017, more than any other such company in the world. 

 

Abe sends greetings to overseas Chinese in Japan on upcoming Spring Festival 


Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has sent his greetings to overseas Chinese in Japan on the upcoming Spring Festival, or the Lunar New Year.


The Japanese prime minister sent his holiday wishes to the Chinese people in Japan ahead of the traditional festival, through a public letter published Thursday on Chubun, a Chinese language newspaper in Japan.


As this year marks the 40th anniversary of the signing of the China-Japan Treaty of Peace and Friendship, he would like to reiterate his wishes to make 2018 a year in which people in both countries could feel great improvement in the bilateral ties.
