Five detained following east China road accident


Authorities say five people suspected of causing a fatal road accident in Jiangxi have been detained.


Tuesday's accident left 11 people dead and 20 others hurt on the northern outskirts of the city of Ganzhou.


Local police say five suspects, including the legal representative of a transport company which owned the bus involved, have been detained.


31 people were onboard the 19-seater when it went off the road at a downhill turn and plunged into a 10-meter ditch.


Nine passengers were killed on impact, while two others later died in hospital.


Heavy fog strands over 100,000 tourists in Hainan


More than 100,000 passengers and more than 10,000 cars are stranded in Hainan island due to heavy fog.


The fog has disrupted ferry services on the Qiongzhou Strait in south China.


According to the local maritime department, the fog has lasted for seven days, with the visibility being less than 200 meters at times.


Nearly 10,000 vehicles and about 44,000 passengers were shipped across the strait to Guangdong Province on Wednesday, the last day of the Spring Festival holiday.


New Chinese research vessel sets sail off


A new Chinese research vessel, with both civilian and military components, is sailing towards the South China Sea.

The vessel, "Haimeng," has left from its home port in Weihai in Shandong.


Maritime resource research, ocean environment observation and oil and gas exploration will be among its major tasks.


Created by two military universities, the vessel has been co-designed by a local ocean research center and private investors.


Researchers say the vessel will be a platform for maritime resource exploration and civilian and military integration.


China remains as Philippines' top trading partner in 2017


New stats show China remains the Philippines' top trading partner for the second-straight year.


Philippine economic officials say exports to China grew 8.4 percent in 2017, with the top exports mostly being electronic products.


They also say as China rebalances to a more consumption-driven economy, it will provide opportunities for more exports of consumer goods and agricultural products.


Philippine imports from China also increased 8.1 percent last year.


China surpassed Japan to become the Philippines' top bilateral trading partner in 2016.


15 killed in fresh Saudi-led airstrike in Yemen


Security officials say at least 15 civilians have been killed in a coalition airstrike in northern Yemen.


The airstrike targeted the citizens' taxis in a district in Saada while they were parking near a popular market on the highway.


A medic at the district said the 15 dead were mostly women and children travelling in the taxis.


The attack was the latest in a series of airstrikes conducted by Saudi-led coalition air force since the start of the war in Yemen three years ago.


South Africa hikes VAT, first time in two decades


South Africa will increase its Value Added Tax for the first time in 25 years as part of an attempt to reduce its budget deficit.


The government is saddled with a 4.1 billion US dollar revenue gap.


The news came as part of Finance Minister Malusi Gigaba's first annual budget in the South African Parliament in Cape Town.


South Africa's VAT has remained constant since 1993. It will increase to 15 percent from 14 percent as of April 1 this year.


AU issues calls for peace, stability in Ethiopia


The African Union is calling on Ethiopian stakeholders to refrain from acts that undermine peace and stability.


The call has been made by the head of the AU Commission.


Moussa Mahamat has also said the AU welcomes steps taken by Ethiopian authorities in January to widen the political and democratic space.

Students demanding gun control converge on U.S. capitol and White House


Hundreds of students from Washington, D.C.-area high schools rallied in front of the US Capitol on Wednesday, demanding gun control. They also staged a sit-in outside the White House.


Chanting "What do we want? Gun Control," students protesting the Valentine's Day mass shooting in Florida said they hoped lawmakers would heed their message.


Investigators said the Florida assault was carried out by 19-year-old former student Nikolas Cruz, who purchased an AR-15 nearly a year ago.


HNA property unit pledges 41 percent stake as collateral for loan


HNA has pledged around 41-percent of a real estate unit as collateral for a loan from Hong Kong private equity firm PAG.


The deal comes straight after a 2-billion-US-dollar sale of two Hong Kong land parcels by the HNA subsidiary.


The move is part of a slew of fundraising efforts by the Chinese conglomerate to address a liquidity crunch following a 50-billion-dollar acquisition spree over the last two years.
