CPC leaders stress efforts to build Xiongan New Area

The Chinese President is stressing the importance of the efforts to build Xiongan New Area into a "high-quality modern socialist city."

Xi Jinping, also the general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, has made the call in a meeting with senior party officials.

The Xiongan new area was established last April, as a new economic zone about 100 kilometers southwest of Beijing.

It is the third new major New Area in China, after the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone and the Shanghai Pudong New Area.

Xiongan New Area is expected to phase out some non-essential functions from Beijing, help alleviate population density in the capital, as well as produce new engines for economic growth.

5,600 CPC members punished in Jan. for frugality violations

More than 56-hundred Communist Party of China members and officials were punished last month, for violating the Party's frugality code.

The party's top anti-graft body says those people were involved in over 4-thousand cases, which included giving out unauthorized subsidies or welfare, giving and taking gifts and money, and misusing public funds.

In late 2012, central authorities issued the Party's frugality code, prohibiting government officials from engaging in hedonism and extravagance.

The party's Central Commission for Discipline Inspection now has a monthly reporting system for the implementation of the rules.

71-thousand people were punished last year for violating the rules.

The ambassador's remarks come after British Prime Minister Theresa May paid a visit to China three weeks ago, during which the two countries signed a series of agreements related to trade, education, culture, science and technology.

China set to overtake U.S. as biggest nuclear energy nation, IEA says

The International Energy Agency says China is set to overtake the US to become the world's largest nuclear-power producer by 2030.

The agency's Executive Director Fatih Birol made the comments at a conference in London this week.

The IEA head estimates China will more than triple its nuclear energy capacity over the next 20 years.

The US has been a global nuclear power leader since the 1960s, with nuclear power supplying 20-percent of its energy use.

However, Birol says there have been very few additions to the US nuclear capacity in recent years.

Data from the IEA shows more than a third of nuclear power plants under construction across the world today are in China.

He adds that the nuclear deal would not survive, even if the US extends its sanction waivers.
