China to maintain tough stance against corruption: supervision minister


A top Chinese official says China will maintain a tough stance against corruption.


Minister of Supervision Yang Xiaodu made the remarks at a group media interview on the sidelines of China's first session of the 13th National People's Congress in Beijing.


The minister says that "Since the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, they have investigated and penalized one state leader and 29 central officials."


In the meantime, the minister also stressed that education and supervision are important for officials and CPC members.


Also during Monday's session, Minister of Commerce Zhong Shan said China became the world's biggest trading nation last year.


Official data show China's foreign trade volume reached more than 27 trillion yuan last year.


The commerce minister also said the scale of China's cross-border e-commerce ranked first in the world, covering a large number of countries and regions.


Last year, China's cross-border e-commerce trade surged over 80 percent from a year earlier to more than 90 billion yuan.


North Korean's Kim Jong Un meets with South Korean delegation


North Korea and South Korea have reportedly made "a satisfactory agreement" over a bilateral summit.


The development has been reported by North Korea's official media, after North Korean leader Kim Jong Un met with South Korean President Moon Jae-in's special envoys on Monday.


The 10-member South Korean delegation included a top national security advisor to Moon Jae-in.


The meeting comes as inter-Korean relations have thawed over the recently-concluded Winter Olympics in South Korea's PyeongChang, where the two countries marched under a unified Korean flag during the opening ceremony.


North Korea also sent athletes, artists and a high-level delegation to PyeongChang.


The North is now sending athletes to participate in the Winter Paralympics, set to kick off on Friday.


No winner as anti-immigrant, populist forces surge in Italy election


According to the Italian interior ministry numbers published Monday, voters have delivered no clear winner in the country's election.


However, anti-immigrant, euro-skeptic and populist forces have been rewarded.


At least 73 percent of Italy's 46.5 million voting age citizens turned out on Sunday to renew the Senate and the Lower House.

This came after US President Donald Trump announced his decision on tariffs on imported steel and aluminum.


His decision has received worldwide criticism and retaliatory intentions from some of America's closest allies.

Turkey detains 4 IS suspects over planned US embassy attack


Turkish police have reportedly detained four Islamic State suspects, as part of an investigation into a possible attack on the U.S. Embassy in Ankara.


The US Embassy was closed on Monday over an unspecified security threat.


Security was high outside the building, and police searched pedestrians before allowing them to enter a street where the main gate is located.


Turkish media say police detained four suspects on Monday - all of them Iraqi nationals.


Pakistan test-fires long range anti-ship cruise missiles


A statement from the Pakistan Navy says that Pakistan has successfully test-fired long range anti-ship cruise missiles.


The Pakistan Navy and the Pakistan Air Force jointly tested the anti-ship cruise missiles, the C-802 AK, air to surface missiles.


The statement noted that the successful joint launch of the missiles by two defence forces of Pakistan exhibits the desired interaction and cooperation between the two organizations.


Bloomberg appointed UN special envoy on Climate Action


Former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg has been appointed as a UN special envoy for climate action.


Bloomberg will support the climate strategy of UN chief Antonio Guterres and his efforts toward the planned 2019 Climate Summit at UN Headquarters in New York.


The UN says the planned Climate Summit will mobilize stronger and more ambitious action toward 2020 climate targets, and that Bloomberg will leverage efforts in key areas of the Climate Summit to encourage rapid and enhanced implementation of the Paris Agreement.


Bloomberg is the founder of the Bloomberg financial news and information service.
