Xi calls for deepened military-civilian integration


Chinese President Xi Jinping has stressed practical efforts to further deepen military-civilian integration to provide impetus and support for realizing the Chinese dream and the goal to build a strong military.


Xi Jinping, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, made the remarks when attending a plenary meeting of the People's Liberation Army and armed police at the ongoing session of the 13th National People's Congress.


Xi Jinping stressed that implementing the strategy of military-civilian integration is a prerequisite for building integrated national strategies and strategic capabilities and for realizing the Party's goal of building a strong military in the new era.


Xi expects smooth N.Korea-S.Korea summit, N.Korea-U.S. dialogue


Chinese President Xi Jinping has met with Chung Eui-yong, top national security advisor for South Korean President Moon Jae-in, in Beijing.


Chung Eui-yong recently led a delegation to meet with North Korean top leader Kim Jong-un, after which he also flew to Washington to meet with US President Donald Trump.

Xi Jinping said China also supports dialogue between the United States and North Korea.


Chung thanked Xi Jinping for China's leading role in helping with positive changes on the Korean Peninsula, and said South Korea is willing to coordinate closely with China to maintain the current momentum in the region.


British PM blames Russia over "poisoning attack" row


British Prime Minister Theresa May says it was "highly likely" that Russia was responsible for former Russian operative Sergei Skripal's poisoning in Salisbury.


The Prime Minister spoke in the House of Commons after chairing a National Security Council meeting to hear the latest evidence in the case.


The Prime Minister also said Russia's ambassador to London had been summoned to explain to British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson how the nerve agent came to have been used in the March 4 incident in Salisbury.


66-year-old Skripal and his 33-year-old daughter Yulia have been in hospital in critical condition since being found unconscious on a bench outside a shopping centre in the city.


Three fatal bombings in Austin "related": police


Police in the U.S. city of Austin, Texas, say they believe that three package bombings over the past 10 days were "related."


Two separate explosions occurred Monday in two residential houses in Austin, killing a teenager and wounding two women.


It's the third such incident this month in the city.


A package blast rocked another Austin home on March 2, killing a man.


Deal reached on evacuation of wounded from eastern Ghouta


A major rebel group in Syria's eastern Ghouta region has announced a deal with Russia over the evacuation of the wounded from the besieged area.


The Islam Army says the agreement will allow the UN to evacuate wounded people out of Eastern Ghouta for medical treatment.


The Saudi-backed group says the move comes as a result of the government siege in Eastern Ghouta, with the lack of medication and "targeting of medical facilities."


UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has deplored the failure to implement a Security Council resolution that demands cease-fire in Syria.


He says fighting has intensified in eastern Ghouta between the government and rebels, after the adoption of the resolution late last month.


Some reports suggest that more than 1,000 civilians have been killed since the resolution was adopted.


Colombian government to resume peace talks with guerrilla group ELN


Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos says that his government will resume peace talks with the National Liberation Army guerrillas to end five decades of fighting.


Santo has made the announcement during a televised address.

U.S. airport duty-free retailer now accepts Alipay and WeChat pay


A U.S. airport duty-free retailer is now accepting Chinese electronic payment via smartphones in a bid to lure more Chinese tourists.


International Shoppes, a duty free and specialty retailer, is ready to accept Alipay and WeChat Pay, to welcome and better serve Chinese customers.


Alipay, run by e-commerce provider Alibaba, and WeChat Pay, run by tech giant Tencent, are the two most popular forms of mobile payment in China.


The apps on mobile devices have 540 million and 650 million users, respectively. Together, they control more than 92 percent of the Chinese market.


International Shoppes has operated duty free facilities and retail services for more than 65 years at some of the major airports in the US, such as New York's JFK and Washington DC's Dulles.
