Xi holds phone talk with Modi on bilateral ties

Chinese President Xi Jinping has held a phone conversation with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

2017年9月5日,习近平在厦门会见来华出席金砖国家领导人第九次会晤和新兴市场国家与发展中国家对话会的印度总理莫迪。

Modi first congratulated the Chinese leader again on being elected president.

Modi says both India and China are ancient civilizations with global influence, adding that India will work with China to enhance high-level exchanges, deepen bilateral ties, strengthen coordination and cooperation in international affairs, and further develop a partnership between the two countries.

Xi Jinping said he appreciated Modi's congratulations, saying the just-concluded annual sessions of the Chinese National People's Congress (NPC) and the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) have achieved a great success.

Xi Jinping said China will deepen its reform and opening up, adding that China, while realizing its own development, will make greater contribution to the common development and progress of the world.

Supervision law gives legal teeth to China's graft-busting agency

The Supervision Law has been adopted by China's national legislature, legalizing a more sophisticated and efficient anti-graft network.

The law was adopted at the first session of the 13th National People's Congress (NPC) through a vote after three readings.

The new law integrates supervisory 48 29837 48 14397 0 0 3326 0 0:00:08 0:00:04 0:00:04 3325 power that was divided among three agencies.

UN seeks access to Syria's Ghouta and Afrin as needs grow

The United Nations has demanded full access to civilians in the ravaged Syrian zone of eastern Ghouta and the northern town of Afrin, to meet their urgent humanitarian needs.

Marixie Mercado, UN Children's Fund or UNICEF spokeswoman, says people in that region, especially children, need urgent humanitarian assistance.

UNICEF says that most displaced children fall victim to diarrhea and respiratory infections, in addition to malnutrition.

The UN estimates that around 50,000 civilians, 70 percent of whom are women and children, have fled the besieged rebel-held enclave of eastern Ghouta, near Damascus.

Former French President Sarkozy in police custody over campaign financing

Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy has reportedly been in police custody for an investigation into his election campaign financing.

Sarkozy has reportedly appeared before financial magistrates near Paris, as part of an inquiry into whether he took cash from Libya to fund his successful election bid in 2007.

A judicial inquiry was opened as early as April 2013 into the suspected irregularities over the former president's campaign funding, after an online journal unveiled that Libya had offered money to finance his campaign.

In 2016, a French-Lebanese businessman revealed that he delivered three suitcases containing five million euros in cash, from late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi to Sarkozy, as well as to Sarkozy's former chief of staff and campaign director, between 2006 and 2007.

Officials say a package bomb has blown up at a FedEx Corp distribution center near San Antonio.

The FBI is investigating whether it is linked to a series of four homemade bombs that hit the Texas capital of Austin this month.

Officials do not say if the latest incident is the work of what Austin police believe could be a serial bomber responsible for the four earlier devices that killed two people and injured four others.

The blast at the FedEx facility in Schertz was the fifth in the state in the last 18 days.

BMW headquarters searched by police in emissions raid

German prosecutors have raided the headquarters of BMW as part of an investigation into a suspicious use of emissions cheating software.

The investigation was opened last month.

Law enforcement officials also searched a BMW engine plant in Austria.

The German luxury car maker says prosecutors looked into software in over 11-thousand vehicles.

However, it claims the findings did not reveal a deliberate manipulation of emissions.

Last month, BMW recalled nearly 12,000 cars to fix an engine management software issue.
